Hi,
Wondering if anybody has purchased or experienced these training cd's from digital-tutors.com

http://www.digital-tutors.com/digital_tutors/maya/index_maya_cd_basics.htm

Would you recommend them for someone like me that is trying to learn Maya?
It seems like a cool way to learn the basics of the program.

Thanks for your input.

God Bless,
George

sure...its good stuff......he messed up on the sculpting part though...that video teaches some stuff that is wrong..he mentions that an attribute called strength is linked to depth...when it is not....it is linked to the amount of autosmooth if it is checked...max displacement is depth...but for 40 bucks you'll learn alot of cool stuff....check out 3dbuzz.com to if you already haven't...they'll send you free maya cd's

Their site is full of free videos. Check out the freebies before committing. I think they are pretty awesome.

I just took a look at the free tuts...I don't think their worth buying. He's so annoying to listen to and he sounds like he haven't prepared the lesson. smells like bad quality tuts to me

Also, a little advice from me. Try to stay away from video tuts, 'cause they tend to make you into a zombie and you end up only doing precisly as the video said. Well that's my experience with video tuts. I remember me watching some head modelling tut once, and after hours looking and observing then I felt like I couldn't do anything creative 'cause I only knew that dumb method :(

Oh well, this is only my experience with stuff like this. You decide :)

Hey George...

Have you checked out 3dbuzz.com yet? Their video training cds are free of charge (you can either download them if you have a broadband connection or they will mail them to you free of charge and that includes free postage). They have two Maya training cds right now and they would probably be enough to get you going with Maya.

hm, I really like the videos from digital tutors :shame:

Can't say that he is annoying. I think he did a great job on the rigging tutorials because they really helped me alot.

just because he helped doesn't mean that he can't sound annoying :)
In my opinion he says to many uhms and such (at least he did in the ones I watched), that's what I find irritating

Hey Guys,
Thanks for the replies... These Training CD's seem interesting because you're learning Maya by going through a project from start to finish... It would seem like a more enjoyable way to learn. :)

I have checked out 3d buzz .. good stuff there as well.

The Gnomon videos/DVDs are the best ones out there, bar none.

Video tuts are for us lazy guys :p I was kind of dissapointed with the Gnomon DVD's to be honnest, I mean it was quality lessons that were well prepared and all, and they do teach you a lot, but the video picture quality was a bit lacking IMO, you couldn't read their menus, it was all kind of fuzzy.

If you get ahold of a book titled "Maya 4 Fundamentals" it comes with a CD full of video tuts and scene files, the video's are crystal clear, 800x600 well organised and presented. The book is good as well. I think there will be a new release of this book for maya 4.5 called "Maya Savvy" but I'm not sure if its out yet.

There are a vast number of free tutorials(both video and text) but the thing I like about these basics cd's from digital tutor is that it goes through the process of completing a project from start to finish. Granted there are tuts for each area of a project process, but they're not complete, meaning it's just one part.

Like I've said before, it just seems like a fun way to learn the basics of the program. I have gnomon tapes and buzz tapes.. on rigging only.

Thanks for the input.

I'm also thinking about the maya 4.5 savvy book or the maya 4.5 fundamentals book. both out in about a week and half.

God Bless,
George
