View Full Version : Transparent image planes
Blueguy 03-28-2006, 11:11 PM So I'm modeling a human using photographic image planes and I've recently seen some people doing so with semi-transparent image planes that allow them to see the grid in the ortho views over the image planes. I've gone in and messed with the plane's alpha gain but I can't get the grid visible through it.
What file format do I need to use and how do I get the planes seethrough? I've tried both jpgs and .tifs so far.

you don't need a special image. in the attributes for an image plane there is an "Alpha Gain". Adjust that for transparency.

Right, as I said I've messed with the alpha gain to no avail. Any reason why that might be?

Sorry, guess I read it too fast. But I have never had that not work. I am not sure what is going on with that. We are talking about the alpha gain on an actual image plane, not a shader applied to a plane right? But there are still two other ways you could do it.
If you want the most control instead of an image plane I would just use a plane (the correct size of your image) and apply a shader to it. You can then use the transparency settings of the shader to adjust the alpha level. I almost always do this and not use image planes at all.
If you just want an image plane with transparency, use a .tif file with a 50% white alpha (grey). Or a corresponding level of white depending on how much transparency you want. You could not change this as easily as the first suggestion though.
