An assignment for an art class I'm taking is to do at least one sketch or full drawing every week for six weeks. All the sketches at the end will be compiled into a binder or book, and presented as the final project. Each person is supposed to choose a theme for their sketches, and mine (unless I change it later) is people I see on the bus. I ride the bus a lot, so I'll have plenty of material.

I plan on updating this thread at least once every week, so stay tuned. Here are the sketches I have so far; the first page is from last night and the bottom two are from this morning.

Wow. I really like these - I would love to see almost all of these as finished pieces.. would some of these be considered 'gesture' drawings? Even in repose? I wouldn't know, sorry if that was a lame question.

Is it just me or do almost all of them have a very bland, vacant 'elsewhere' expression on their face? Is that just what people do when forced to spend time in stranger's presence on a daily basis? Introvert? I like how none of them are looking at you, too - all are just... somewhere else. Sleeping, daydreaming, trying NOT to look at you.... such wonderful captures.

I would love to see more detail, since these seem to be quick sketches - do you plan to complete them?

I suppose some of them could be considered gesture drawings; none of them took more than 15 minutes. The guys who are holding onto the bars took maybe five minutes each.

Yes, they all have those sorts of looks. The bus isn't exactly a wonderful thing to ride every day, so many people try to just sleep through it or something. Some of these people spend an hour or an hour and a half going each way on the bus every day (including myself. Grand total is 3 hours every day.), so it gets really old really fast.

I don't know what I'm going to do with these yet. I may revisit them later or I might leave them as they are. I still have quite a while until this project is over, and I'm speeding up to the point where I might do complete drawings on the bus. We'll see, won't we? :D I'm still learning to draw people effectively, and I have even improved in the two weeks I've done this now, so maybe by the time this is over I'll be able to knock out some really good stuff.

So this sketch project has had some interesting effects. Lately I've been finally breaking out of many of the things I had hammered into my head when I was in my early to mid teens (like dating before you're ready to be married is wrong or something, but that's another time and place). I've actually been able to come up with arguments for why the things my mom told me about all kinds of things were wrong or erroneous, and today I finally acted on this change in some way.

So I was sitting on the bus this afternoon and I had just pulled out my sketch book because some people I thought would be interesting to draw got on. Four of the people sat quite a ways off on the other end of the bus, and one (fairly good-looking) girl sat down a couple of seats away. I've seen her before and I knew that she had a very interesting face that would be great to draw, so that's what I tried to do. She obviously knew that I was trying to draw her because she kept looking straight at me whenever I'd glance at her for reference.

Anyways, she started fidgeting and moving around a lot and it was becoming increasingly difficult to draw her because she'd move whenever I started drawing. It got so annoying that I decided, "Screw it! I can't draw this girl!" So I stopped drawing, wrote her a little message on a page of my paper, crumpled it up and tossed it to her as I got off the bus. I told her that I was extremely frustrated because she kept moving around, and if she'd just hold her position for a little while I could do a nice profile with her (very interesting) nose. Yes, I mentioned her nose. It was big and it looked like a plowshare, but I couldn't help myself. It was great to look at.

So I did it. Today was the closest I've ever come to flirting with somebody, and the sketches were to blame. This is so weird.
