View Full Version : Character: Karen "Spike" Johnson
Commiekeebler 12-24-2002, 05:57 AM This is just the face. Please rip it up. I need help cuz I've been staring at her for too long, can't see what's wrong with it any more. Or at least, not very well.

Don't just tell it sucks, tell me why.
I don't want to hear any praise whatsoever. You've been warned. :)

well, the models good, but the texture is kinda funny in certin areas. right next to the nostrils. they look like dirty streaks.
it might me the compression , i dont know. theres also
something going on with her eyes.
the lighting gcould be better also. hoe many polys is this?

its good. But the neck looks really odd, there are weird bumps in the smile lines of checks, the ear needs a whole lot of reworking, and the hair could be better.

well, there are a couple of things that i think would really improve your model. thie first is the neck. htere seems to be something really strange going on there. i don't know if it is the posing or the actually geometry that is off, but it looks like here chin goes through her neck. another thing is the texturing. i think that her skin is a little too dirty as well as a little too blue. try just adding procedurals of different skin colors. that will really help the look of discolorations. also the eyes are only one color. the iris should be much more involved, at least for a realistic model. there is also a crack in between the patches at the right temple. i think that necklace could use some more texturing as well as opposed to a flat black. my last comment would be on the nose. i feel like you need some more cross-sections to round it out more as well as making it not quite so cylindrical.
besides the things that i have mentioned, i think that you have a really good start. i think that you did a great job with the eyelasshes and the eyebrows. i think that the hair texture looks good as wellthough it is a little flat. anyway, i hope this helps, good luck. i look forward to seeing some progress.
feel free to critique my work. all comments appreciated@

hmm
upper eye lid, there looks to be some weird dark spot ?
her hair line is really blury.
she's got a light spot between her eye brows, looks strange ?
something's up with the crease in the eye (where the tear ducts are iirc) ?
ears bit out of proportion ?
the creases in the ear could be better defined ?
the dog chain really is quite underdetailed comparatively speaking.
the way my chain looks like :D

with the lighting, we are seeing some fall off on the face, looks kinda stange.
those are some things i just noticed right away..

Thanks guys!
It's made with Animation Master, so it's not polygons but patches made of splines. The dirty streaks near the nose are the artifacts of this technology called creases. Painfully aware of them, hoping it won't be obvious in the animation, where she'll be much smaller.
I think the character has about 3000 patches, so this means somewhere between 12000-24000 polys. The sharp bright line near the ear is due to a bug in the software, btw. I'll have it corrected eventually.
Thanks again, keep 'em coming!

I think that you must work on the texture it looks very strange in some areas. Second thing is the neck it looks very unrealistic. And ofcourse the hair man look a her scalp it's very smooth and dusty it doesn't look good, but the other things is good
Aaa yes one other thig try fix the ear in the back

that's funny that you mention hash because i actually learned on it and used it for a couple of years. i didn't even consider that you might be using that. i am very aware of the problems with hash as i found it almost unusable in any sort of production environment.(at least 9.5 was. 8.5 would run some of the time anyway and not constantly delete choreography files and animation like 9.5. we went through the whole alphabet and more of fixes and with every fix came new bugs. god bless hash. i would just suggest learning some higher end software and leaving hash as they are only going down hill in my eyes. but i guess i am just a little bitter, i just thought that i would share my experiences with you. sorry to rant. good luck

by the way, i assume that you already know this but i figured i would say it anyway. a good way to ensure that your geometry is smooth and has no creases is if the splines have a flowing nature and follow the musculature. the non-flowieness is what makes the creases. also, adjusting the besier handles can be helpful in areas like the nose to smooth things out. that's all
