If you guys read the article it states that they will both be using a new software platform called Zeno in hopes both companies will share assets and collaborate.

Warpy wasn't reporting news that the companies are related through Lucas. The article even goes so far as to state the fact in the opening paragraph.

Because two companies are owned by the same person doesn't mean they are automatically "joined" or work together.

No, the article is new, based on a presentaion Sullivan and Williams gave at GDC 2006 (I have other links at my site).

But the news itself is kinda old, since when they announced that the companies would move to the same facility at the Presidio, there were already news that they would merge the infrastructure and pipeline.

Seems there is some confusion about the news out there. The thing is that they are using Zeno as the base for both companies operations.

Zeno is their propietary animation environment. It started as dynamics code for Star Wars Ep. 1 (circa 1998). Since then it has been expanded to handle more things. Basically it's the base of the pipeline, designed so that off the shelf software can plug in. Say do work in Maya, but when they need to run some propietary code for something, they do it in Zeno. It's modular so they can keep plugin new modules. It allows to seamlessly work between off the shelf and their propietary apps.

It's not only a 3D animation environment, but also has stuff for 2.5D work for the matte painting dept., called Zenviro.

I do know what it looks like, though I'm bound by secrecy.
