View Full Version : making shag more stable?
snot_nose 12-23-2002, 11:42 PM I just spent the whole day making some hair for my character.
now when i've got the hair it seems that after every little thing that i move in my scene my max is falling down.
i tried to hide my hair while i'm animating, but it hold only for maybe a minute more.
i got 19975 hair strands. and my shag hair is applied 11 times in my environment effects dialog, is it consider normal?
is there away to make it more stable? or should i work on my scene and then when i finish to merge it back?

R U absolutely sure it's shag that's doing it? Apparently, nearly all max crashes are related to graphics card settings. And I happen to agree. When you get a card set up properly, you hardly ever have max doing the "quick exit feature"

3rd Dimentia:
Bullshit.
Snot_Nose:
Shag has a tendency to corrupt the ShagView object when the scene starts to get a little heavy. Go through all your ShagHair entries and remove the emitter. That will effectively remove all the hair from the scene (including the ShagView Objects), but the Shag entries in the Environment rollout will remain. When you come to render just go through them all again and re-pick the emitters, which should create brand-new non-corrupted ShagView objects exactly as they were when you removed them.

actually, i merged the scene into a new one and it looks like it's working fine (till now), but i'm 100% sure that it is related to the shag, i guess this technic of merging everything to a new scene works alot when it comes to scenes that keep crashing. i just hope it will hold for a while.
Iain mcfadzen: i'll try your what you say.
3rd dimentia: i got gi force 4 ti, wich i know is consider very good (it better be, it cost me alot), but i don't think i ever setup my card except when i installed max. maybe that's why my max keep crashing from every little thing, and i have to do lots of back ups.
could you tell me where do i setup? i couldn't find anything to do with my graphic card in the preferences.
and for another (related) question: is it possible to xref objects INCLUDING hair, i mean i'm almost sure i can. i remember that i did that once, but the second time i used xref for my objects, my hair objects seemed to be on the xref list but they weren't visible.
i still haven't decided if i want my character bold or not, i actually like him when he's bold, and my scene don't crash, but i worked more then a day over it and i don't know if i want to throw it away (plus it will be probably an extra in my portfolio, right?) :D
ok so this is a pic of him with the hair:

and this is without:
btw he's suppose to be a business man ("the bad guys")
so what do you reckon?
