Sub "D" modeling.

I have seen Wiro's fine tutorial.I have see a few others as well. But I am hoping to find a place where I can get the most basic explanations. A real beginners tutorial on all that is Sub-d modeling. Or any books with a chapter or two on it?
Edge loops, cuts, etc, where do I get these tools, where are they in Max 4.2? I am new to Max. Thanks for any advice or guidance,it's appreaciated.

yeah a edgeloop tut would be nice. however, cuts and basic stuff like that you can make when you collapse a mesh to a editable poly.. then choose edge.. the cut.. :)

subd modeling cannot be 'taught'. there are a few tricks here and there, but really theres only a few, mostly about how to get quads in certain situations.

the other thing to understand is how to bunch vertices up to get harder/softer edges.

the rest, its practice, trial, and error. you must take the road yourself my friend

First of all... head on over to www.scriptspot.com and snag a copy of MeshTools 2.5 AND csPolyTools. Absolute must have's.

After you get those installed, Use "editable poly" NOT editable mesh when your modeling. There only available in poly.

Trial and error is really the only advice I can give at this point. Read some tutorials. Sculpt with actual clay (not the awesome 3d modeler... www.rocket3d.com ;) ), Draw, Paint, Study Life, Study color.

Thanks for your advice and links. I'll get to it now. I was wondering however if you can use "Meshtools" with Max 5? It says Max 4 at the Maxscript.com site.
Also when you want to perform an edgeloop, could someone quickly explain how you go about this? Thanks for the help,it's very nice of you to take the time for this Max beginner when it comes to Sub-D modeling.

Thank you for finding the PDF version. I've been pulling out my hair trying to find the HTML version, but it looks like it went away.

I am just as lost. The tuts out there are fine to a point. But how in the World does one even make the first step? I have no idea of how to even begin. How do you draw an edgeloop, can someone explain it in plain English.or in French, anything please. I mean I get the basic principles of the whole concept, but the most basic procedures are not explained anywhere.
The tuts out there just dig right in,but the very first steps or how to's are omitted. How do you draw an edgeloop? I tinker and mess with all the tools but it's always the same,I am missing the basic first steps. They no where to be found. I am as lost as The Thread starter,I thought I was the only one.
Is there anyway of helping guys like myself out? I am smart enough for most things, but this is just eluding me.I am feeling kind of dumb now.  :hmm:

I draw edge loops on paper. I've got a sketch book filled with drawings of hands, bodies, and faces of how I want to do it in Max. Edge loops on 2d paper for lots of things. I want a very clear undestanding of the subject and the way I want to do it (geometry wise) way before I get started modeling. If you give me a sketch or a photo, the first thing I do is draw over the top of it.

When I'm finally comfortable with it, I usually go with Splines and Surface to start. Maybe ven scan my sketches in for reference. Hell, maybe even do some Paths in PhotoShop to Export/Import AI files.

Basically, start 2d then make it 3d. Something like that. In a nutshell. That's my approach.

Still working on making a face template that I like. I estimate I'll go through at least 5 more before I'm happy.

don't know who posted this one.
I think it was ambient-whisper, Laa-Yosh or Iain McFadzen

Hi Vladvrz,

Before drawing any Edgeloop, go to some Art Gallery(mais il y a aussi des tres beaux livres) and look how Albrecht Durer build the form in his drawings, engrawings, woodcuts...He is a great modeler. Look how Leonardo paint with light and you will understand just what shading is. Study old painting and mosaics, contemporary movies and animations is not to be the only source where you learn your skill;) Never forget this old - fashioned tip,...et un jour tu auras ton Oscar mon ami! J'en suis sur. Bonne annee Vladvrz!
