this is my first work on R8 and i'm just amazed!
This character is for a personal animation project. Still missin the head... but i'm working on it. I Rigged the skeleton before the modeling. I used MOCCA's soft IK, with some Xpresso expressions, for example (like the one in the MIME) the foot can't go through the floor...
Any advice for the head look?

yeah

its a small creature - about the size of a child - with long wirey hair - it eats small mammals, reptiles and insects but has features simular to primates around the same size

face could be roundish yet with a more or less flat profile, large eyes with catlike pupils - a very broad and flat, almost human nose with large nostrels, and a small chin - the lips are thin and when it smiles it displays rows of sharp teeth and a thin black tongue

and make the hands very thin with muscles & sinew visible and long sharp nails for getting those hard to reach but juicy little creatures it love so much

oh yeah, it speaks limited english in addition to its own native tongue and is highly intelligent

name him Dru

;)

i'm sorry, noen, but you are only right about the size of the creature! :shame:

the head looks compleately different!
it's a creature, that is most active during the night, so it has to have huge eyes and big ears. the eyes glow kinda orange in the dark when they are hit by the moonlight and they move very fast so the creature won't miss any movement in the dark woods. it has a long snout with almost no lips, but at the corner there are teeth sticking out (i think, they are called 'fangs' in english). it has a big triangle-shaped nose (a bit like the nose of a wolf, but much bigger)
surprisingly, it has no fur, even though it looks a bit like a wolf/dog-mixture.

:scream: :p

I don't know why, but I picture a cat-like head. Not *really* a cat's head, but something loosely based on one.

Very nice, It's looking really good but I think the elbow needs some more resolution to get rid of that crease

wow im no 3d expert but i like what you have so far.. for the magic are you going to use c4d? or another program i see him doing some fire balls (ive used illusion before) but not with 3d maybe making a bird dissapear in his moth and feather comming out his nose.. i dont know but i cant wait to see what comes up

DaliFan

I am quessing he could use thinking particles or pyrocluster in C4D

sanciok
12-28-2002, 11:40 PM
Yes, i'm doing everything with C4D. I'm in a 3d cours with Maya, and i'm still learning it. Anyway, i don't have Maya at home and i think that everything that can be made in Maya can be made in C4D.
BTW... no fire balls.... i've something different in my mind! U'll see!!:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

That looks pretty cool. I like the "down in the dumps" pose. You wouldn't want to do a quick tut on rig setup would you :) Just jokin'...unless you want to do one... then I am all for it :)

Keep up the good work

Hey...

Your character is great - he has a real sinister "is he evil? or is he good?" look about him. Maybe when he uses his magic powers, the answer will be clearer! Just a thought!

Anyway, about the character rig tuturial you may or may not post. I was wandering if you, or anybody here knew of a decent resource or tip for good mesh cretion for characters.

To be specific, I am having problems with creasing at the joint of the thigh and pelvis in humanoid characters. Any tips?

Excellent

I think your character would look better with another toe {a stabalizing toe}.The reason being that the head looks very cat/dog like, yet the feet remind of a reptile type of anatomy,or something that does not have a huge degree of intelligence,so by adding a toe its make the character look more evolved and intelligent and expands what you can do with the character yet again. However if your character has just two toes then you have to apply that lack of balance to your charcters movements for it to look right ...jmo :)

I agree with kiwi about the 3rd toe as this model looks pretty much like a cat, looks cool though

and I'd be interested to see how you went about rigging this character, I did the r8 soft ik tutorial but that was quite a while ago

My rigging is quite simple. What i think is that legs must be IK controlled and Arm FK.
So legs has a simple SoftIK structure, with its controllers which have an Xpresso expression that does'nt allow the passing through the floor. There is also a controller for the root bone which control the whole mesh and the up vectors of both the legs.
The leg setup is similar to the examples in the mocca features folder.
Arms are a simple hierarcy, controlled with a posemixer, that allows to control the hand movement.
Tail is a simple simple softIK chain.

If u want me to be more specific :) just ask!

Great character....may I make a suggestion? Make your poses more extreme...check out Mark Behms' sketch here....the character is not simply walking...I'd love to see your guy express himself more dynamically...

Or, for anyone, check out The Animator's Survival Kit by Richard Williams. Best animation book I've seen, even though it's not specifically addressed to computer animation.
