I hope I'm not insulting anyone on here, but I find autodesk's graphic designs to be really painfull to look at, I mean this has been discussed before, and there were some who said what does it matter what the splash screen looks like or who cares what the logo looks like, as long as the software is good, but come on, a first year design student could do better than what I've been seeing, and they probably wouldn't even have to pay him/her...

i think its a seahorse too, coz most of autodesk new logos are base on sea creature. no comment on the design tho, need time to get used to it.

but that is , as far as i can tell, a stylized representation of a
mayan winged serpent god, maybe Quetzalcoatl?
but i think the representation holds up cuz u can still feel the old maya logo style in
the form
which i personally think is cool

autodesk's designs are verry corporatey - i went to their site the other day and thought id got some corporations website - it doesnt really hint otherwise either, its even got a picture of some construction worker on the front, personally i think they should have left Alias as is and just put it under the Autodesk banner, peopple buy maya and other alias softwares to buy maya not to buy 3D's Max. And im not baging 3DS max but its no maya and they better not do anything Autodesky to it or theyll loose a huge market.

I use this as my splash screen anyway. I've been customizing them every since I started using it. I can't stand Maya's stock splash screens.

I personally like Meats Meier's artwork in Maya 7. I hope they do the same kind of thing for 7.5 (not saying they should use the wired style that Meats is known for).

I am currently planning on changing the splash to feature Larry Ewing's Tux in the same style (for my copy of Maya for Linux)

At least for linux, the splash image is loaded from /usr/aw/maya7.0/icons/MayaStartupImage.xpm. For windows it probably is also in that same relative path (C:\Program Files\Alias\Maya\Icons) and for Mac it is a similiar path (or is it stored in the resource fork?)

Here is something I found in my mailbox today from the "Maya" family in Toronto. Apparently there are some in Slovenia, of all the places, that love our software so much that they created a Maya Grille. Makes you wonder doesn't it?:)

i sure hope that's not what they're doing, because the word "Maya" has nothing whatsoever to do with the South American civilzation. it is my understanding that the program was actually named after the Hindu/Buddhist concept of Maya, which is the world of illusion; supposedly the world itself is an illusion (Maya) which must be seen through in order to find your true self. i'm not sure of the specifics, but i think that's the gist of it. makes more sense than naming it after a civilization that sacrificed people to their gods, at least.

C:\Program Files\Alias\Maya7.0\bin\MayaRes.dll is where maya keeps quite a few of the UI images including the splash screen image.

you'll need a resource editor to change the images in that dll. Then you can change the splash.

that logo really does look lame... I think I liked it more when it was soo tiny I could barely make out what it was, i.e. when we first saw it posted here.

oh well its just a logo, but still they could have made more of an effort, I'm sure a Maya fan would have done a better job of coming up with a logo for Maya.

Have you noticed that Maya logo at the left bottom of the UI?That's going to be changed too.What I do hope is that they will change the theme/skin of the UI of Maya,currently it looks so old and boring.So I don't hope that they will change the functionality of the UI,like that they will remove the shelf or so,but that they make it more eyecandy.I love the theme of Max's UI.

I'd rather not see a big "M" in the logo. That is a little too simplistic design for me. This logo- I could have this logo by itself on a t-shirt and it would be neat, and most people wouldn't know I was a total computer geek.

I'm sure there is a deeper meaning behind it- perhaps it is a phoenix? Could be cool. Regardless, though, I'm glad there is some enigmatic animal there. It has much more personality.

The type treatment though, I could see improving.

Nothing about that new logo makes me feel inspired to use the software.

Luckily for Autodesk I don't view the logo as a deciding factor in the purchase of a 3D package.
Are we sure that this is it? It's like somebody in Autodesk's HR department made it with an Arial font and a Wingding.

I have been using both Max and Maya for years and I actually like things about both of them but I've always felt like Alias was more stylish than Autodesk. Autodesk stuff always made me feel like an architect and Alias stuff made me feel like an artist. (not a criticism- just an observation)
