Hi guys,
I am "new" to maya, i've been learning how to use it on my own, and when i get stuck with a problem, i quit to start again. My primary goal with maya is the model hard surfaces ( cars, jets, etc),and i also want to learn character modeling(just got my gnomon cd for OM.1). I have done my homework, and i am not coming here because i dont want to work to correct my mistake. I've been a part of the forum for a while now, and this is my first post for help, so pls be easy on me.

my current project is to model an slk 320, and i hope with your help i can turn this wip to my first finished project.
i am starting with the door, just becasue it is one of the hardest panels for me: my progress is below.

I feel like there is something wrong with the door ( other than the absecne of a door handle) but i can not identify it.

it looks weak to me, so i ask how do i make a nurbs birailed surface thicker? (Please help)

if you have any ideas as to why the door is not good, pls share them with me. Thank you.

not sure i just feel like it lacks character, or there is something i can do to make it better...

i'm now working on the door handle... maybe that will help

... i just hope i can stay up and do a good job at 2am :xtreme: time for some caffine

I think it's a bit too early on in the creation process to worry about it lacking character.

well, it is early, but i like to see a car as more than one model and if i can pay attention and effort to modeling the door, bumper etc onle, then i'll have a better model... but thats just me (rookie).

i've put a door handle in it, even though i am not satisfied with the half cylinder just hanging in there ... i'm still working on the door.

does any one have a good alternative to the max chamfer tool, i'm trying to add in the seperation that comes in at the end of the door.

you can use a Nurbs offset but keep in mind it is better to offset in a positive direction than negative. Then you can loft between the two surfaces for the thickness of the door. I also am a newbie so this may not be the way others would do it so if the others have suggestion on thickness of the door please let us know.....thnx

thanks for that, i am trying it right now

is this what you mean : Edit Nurbs---> offset surface(surface fit, ofset distance=1).
i get funny results

It all comes down to lofting more curves together. For thickness issues you just need more geometry. It takes practice to do what you are doing. My advice is to work on the WHOLE car shape before you start going for the pieces. It's actually how they design them, it should be how you build them. So far so good, though.

one of the most important things that gives you a weird feeling about something is the proportions . im not sayin your proportions are wrong. i actually have no clue but check them out :)

Okay try this;

If you look on a real car you will see all the edges are rounded.

Now to get this same effect.

Grab the edge on the right had side of the door or left.

Exture the iso back so it has a bit of depth.

Do a circular filter between them.

And trim the extra's

Now your door will look thick and will have a nice edge to pick up highlights and reflections..
