Coming from a LightWave background with it's relatively simple Content Directory structure, I'm getting real confused by Maya's Project Directories.

Why, when I create a new Project, does Maya always create an additional "default" subdirectory with all the important subdirs below default? What's the purpose? Shouldn't all those subdirs be directly below the Project dir I just created? And half the time Maya doesn't save to those subdirs anyway, but instead just drops all kinds of files directly in the Project dir itself.

With all I've read about Maya's fussiness with texture map locations, I really need to understand how Maya handles dirs. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
each time you create a new project Maya ask you if you want to use subdirectories. By default the directories locations are empty which means Maya will store all your files in the root project directory.
If you are working on a big project I recommend you use subdirectories, you can click the Use Default button at the bottom of the create project window. Maya will use these directories to save configuration files such as Fur, your maps, your renderings, etc...
Be careful because each time you start a new scene (not project) Maya assumes you are working in the last used project. So you have to go to Files/Project/Set Project to tell Maya in which project directory you want to save your scene and all the configuration files.
Hope it's clear, cause it's true it's not easy at the biginning.

That was clear AND helpful. Went back and tried your suggestions, and now I understand what Maya's doing.

Thanks alot!
