View Full Version : Maxtreme for Max 5 is out
dvornik 12-22-2002, 11:19 PM Maxtreme 4.00.26 is out and it officially supports max 5. Preliminary tests are very encouraging. Get it from Nvidia's site (http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=maxtreme_4.00.26) .

The gizmo is showing and the SpecAPC results are better than in max 4.2. And way better than max 5 under OGL.
The heavy models show significant improvement (you can rotate that Appollo in shaded wireframe without lag and can rotate 2 of them in either shaded or wireframe with no lag, that's 325,000 polys). I had a strange rendering error in SpecAPC under 28.84 that disappeared in 41.04 and the results are very decent (7.17/3.05/5.31 on 1900+, Q4 750xgl, 515ram). I am very happy so far.
It's like I got my card back. I'd like to see some results from sofquadroed cards, they should also benefit from it.

What is maxtreme? pdf is ofline on nvidia site...

It's an optimized OGL viewport driver for 3ds max for professional Nvidia cards ("Quadro"). It can also be used on Geforce cards that use Softquadro (part of Rivatuner that you can get from guru3d.com). It didn't work properly in max 5 until now (hopefully).
Max 5 OGL implementation is rather strange and viewport performance is very slow without optimized drivers.
It looks like the 2 main ftp sites have taken it off for some reason. Anyway, that's Mirror 2:

I softquadroed my GF3 ti500 and this latest Maxtreme version is more stable than the last however it still crashes out on various scenes upon loading. (application error...good-bye...click)
Two examples:
Pepe's: abix_fall_splineIK.max
MAX character sample: TarrasqueTextured.max
The scenes that do load fine run great, but I'm not noticing a huge difference over regular Ogl. Maybe tomorrow I'll run some test scores.
On the plus side the Softquadro drivers (based on the 40.xx drivers) by themselves added a huge speed increase over the regular Detonator 40.xx series.

Anybody having problems with vertices flickering in/out when rotating a mesh?
Didn't have this prob. before Maxtreme. When switch back to OpenGL everthing's ok.

Is it possible someone can make a hacked version for us with those installation problems.

Not that particular problem, but I'm having a bunch of other problems with it on different machines. Could be an AMD thing. In some situations there are no vertices shown at all. Bummer.

Bah! too buggy, I'm sticking with Ogl.

I tryed the Invisible thing with the old to... gf3 Ti200
Looking to now do this to my card, and am curious on which card you "quadroed" with your GForce 3 Ti200? I have the same card but can't find a decent resouce for that specific setting.

i think if you must have the speed offered by maxtreme driver, for now you can just go to the costumize > preferences > viewports, then uncheck the show vertices as dots. max will use ticks (like plus sign) instead of dots. that way, the 'flickering dots' problem will not show up. i hope this will be helpfull for all you guys
cheers

but there's a 'little downside'... if you're showing vert's as ticks instead of dots, it will slow down your viewport... at least that's the case with my geforce2.
maybe that's why there's options to show vert's as dots...
anyway, as far as i know, the problem only happen in editable poly. when you use editable mesh, there's no problem. strange...
maybe the guys at nvidia only use editable mesh as there modeling method... *just kidding*
see ya, merry christmas n happy new year to all cgtalk ppl :)

Did someone tried with a gf3 and softquadro ? Is it buggy and if yes, what does bug ?

@Joe, I quaddroed my GF3 ti500 and it's been perfect. I got a big boost in MAX with the machine seeing the card as a Quaddro DDR and my games still run just fine ;)

Just to document Maxtreme problems. At work on our Boxx dual Athlon 2200+ I am not able to open max5 sample files. Max5 crashes to the desktop. On my home single 1800+ there are no such problems. I do get wrong colors on gizmos in perspective view and some vertices disappearing as it was mentioned before.
According to my benchmarks using OGL is about twice slower (in FPS) than using Maxtreme.

Hi all. Sorry to butt in here with a bit OT question (i might post to general later)
I have a Gainward TI4200 8x and i was wondering how softquadro worked and if it would benifit my system at all.
If it does work, can someone give me a brief into to what it is, how it works, and how i get it :p
I'm probably being lazy, but I hate to install crap that messes my system up or that turns out to be crap.
Also any benchmarks/opinions about how good this really is?
Thanks for you input guys.
