What are your interests? I mean, if you wanna go into games, you buy the first title. If you're more into animating, you'd buy the second. It really kinda depends on your interests.

Ok, so you want it all. :) Well, my personal experience is that most of the things a want to learn, is available on the internet. I also bought some books on character modelling and lightning, but 90% of what i learned, is by doing tutorials. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you shouldn't buy those books, but you could for a start try some tutorials that can be found on the internet. there is a book that i have called "MODELING A CHARACTER IN 3DS Max" that shows you how to create low poly character for games. for example quake 3 arena,
