View Full Version : The Canal
Jadetiger 03-25-2006, 02:59 AM This is a model of a part of a canal in Indianapolis I'm working on in Maya and rendering with mental ray. I am a total newbie to 3d so I can use all the help I can get. I'm not too sure about the best way to light this. Right now I have an ambient light up, Final Gather on, and an HDRI. I'll probably have the scene take place just before sunset. The model isn't totally finished yet, the bridge needs more tweaking and I have to add a few hand rails and what not..
Please leave me as many critiques as you can.:)

I think tweaking the lighting to better see all of it with less shadow areas would help so we could comment on modelling

Hi Jade,
Like I said earlier, I'm not real good with texturing, but here are a couple tutorials for water, one for Blender and the other for XSI but they should help:

http://www.garryrunke.com/tutorials/Water-Tutorial.html
Once you have something put together we can give you some input on it. Hope that helps! Keep at it. :)

Hey Christina,
Obviously you're having issues with your Final Gather, but as far as the modeling goes....I think it looks good. Maybe if you post some of your reference images next to some of these renders so people can see what you're going for. Also, a clay render and wireframe would be good so we can see the mesh and contours of the objects. The ambient light is creating some really harsh shadows right now that blow out everything.
For your Final Gather, check your min/max radius. A starting point is usually measuring your scene's width...divide that by ten and get the max radius....divide by ten again and get the min radius. Then, just up the number of FG rays until you get decent results. It should start to look nice around 300-500. Sometimes switching to a different HDRI helps too.

Keep up the good work! See you in class!

CatsEye thanks for your posts. I'm not really sure how to apply them though because they are for XSI and I don't know that or 3dMax at all. ^^; But I will talk to someone tomorrow who might be familiar with those programs and see if they can translate that in Maya for me.
Ryan, here's a Clay Render and a quick water test. For the surface I used a simple ocean shader. Havn't had much time to play around with settings, and I know there's probably something better out there I can use, but for now this will do. For the bottom of the canal I put an algae gunk map on there just for fun. Needs some more work though. Progress will be kinda slow cause I'm tyring to balance 3 other heavy classes on top of this one, but I really appreciate your comments and crits.

Off to a beautifull start i agree also to kill the ambient lighting , other than that almost all test renders start out like this, just keep on going!

This is looking great! I have no complaints for what you've done so far. I'll look forward to seeing how this turns out! Keep it up! :)

I know its hard, but try your best to ignore the sky. I was unable to find one I liked and threw that one on. This is what I have so far. Need to play with the unwraps a bit more, make big changes to the lighting cause those shadows are way harsh, animate the water, fix the sky, and try a night time lighting set up. Bring on the crits! But be gentle... this is my first time.. :D

This is definitely coming along! The sky brings to mind that old show "Eerie Indiana";)
The textures are looking pretty decent, but I think they may be a little dark. I'm kind of going by memory of the canal... I think the sidewalks and walls are softer and lighter. The texture on the far wall seems to be very repetative. I think you may need to mix it up a little more and tone down the contrasts a little. You're on the right track, though!
I'm looking at the near sidewalk, close to the water. The bump on this texture seems a little extreme. Try turning that down a few notches. ........ Good Work! Keep it up!

i like the architectural aspect to it. Looked like a great place to skateboard until you filled it with water ;)
You whats wierd, i tend to like the grey dull render better than your water filled and textured render because the grey's tone looked more cement like to me.
