Hello, im posting this image here because i remember i saw ppl asking about exterior renderings with Maya and mentalray.I did this one using Paint FX for the plants, and FUR for the grass. I tried to use displace maps for the grass, but that was really slow, so i decided to use FUR, and im really impressed how fast FUR can be rendered with mentalray.The light is simple, 1 directional for the sun using the mib_cie_d light shader, i did something new (at least to me) i used the mib_cie_d with the IBL node, which was cool because that way i could enter the right values for the sky color.FG with secondary diffuse bounces was used too, no GI, i know i could improve or change a few things, will try that for the next image..hehe

thats a very nice render slipknot.. especially the grass:thumbsup:
only crit for the big tree on lhe left and the background tree..they look so fake

Fine you can start the thread! hehehehe My thread on exteriors went to forum heaven. I love your scene! So let me ask a couple questions to get the ball rolling.
Did you setup your scene in meters and have the objects the real world size?
Did you use an HDRI image or just IBL with color and mib_cie_d?
Did all the paint effects have to be changed to polygons?
Can I see your file? firstname.lastname@example.org ? hahaha

freaking awesome grass:applause::applause:... it looks incredible, and i like also the general mood :)
Only the plants could be worked a bit cause they don't fit it the image... maybe cause they are rendered with MS, thus no FG?

Nice work... how many time the rendering took?
Some shadows don't fit well with objects... perhaps it comes from fg setting.

The only thing that immediately popped up in my mind when looking at your piece was the repetition of the small plants on the first step - they need a tad more chaos or color variation imho. The other thing that popped up after looking some more time was the oversaturated green on the plants. It perfectly works on the grass though, really nice!

I agree about that some plants looking fake, thats because i decided to use some RPC images, to be honest, thats something i will never do again..hehe Because you need to match the light of the image to make look well integrated into the scene.About the render time this one took 2 hour and 45 minutes with an Athlon XP 1.6 ghz 512mb ram, as im waiting for my new computer i decided to use this one to make a real test, and in my opinion the render was fast.I did not use any HDRI image, i just connected the mib_cie_d shader to the texture IBL texture node.All the Paint FX were converted to polygons, about that "oversaturated" color, i forgot to delete some nodes that Maya creates when you convert the paint fx to poly, so that tree really looks "weird" too green..hehe
The modeling was done using simple boxes, etrude here.. booleans there..hhehe.The scene setup its in centimeters.I need to say that using FUR to create grass its really cool, because that way you can control a lot of parameters, like size , length among other things, i tried to use the v-ray way of creating grass, you know, with displace maps, but that reall dont work, and as i said, with FUR you have much more control, and the render is fast.Anyway, it would be nice to see some other examples of exterior renders created with Maya|Mentalray, as there is a thread for interiors already :)

Thanks so much for answering my questions Slipknot! I only asked the units of this scene because I've found that size of scenes can have an effect on lighting. How large is the building? Like 3 centimeters in length etc.

The fur grass looks really amazing. Could you tell anything about the settings ?
I made a carpet last with fur for an interior and I wanted to render it with Mental Ray. I could render it, but I had soms strange effects. Fitst it is completed over lighted. It is comin g out almost white, but the color is brown.
And the other thing is that it takes ages to render. Specially the precalculation (before it start calculating the final gather point) takes really long as soon as i put the fur in the scene. Did you have that problem as well ?

I agree. I would just add a nice misss_fast shader for that.
cannot wait to see how grass will respond to that near the
transition from shadow and full light. should be really amazing
adding that touch of extra realism. plants love misss_fast.. and
me too !! :)

The grass looks awesome, some of the best I've seen out of MR. What settings did you use for the AA sampling? I've tried to do fur in MR before but could never get the sample settings perfect. Did you render the grass and vegetation in a seperate pass from the building geometry and composite it? Or just render it all in one pass?

About the grass, i started with the grass preset and then i changed the scale, lenght,density (850.000) etc.I didnt used the Min Max Object sample limits, which is on by default when you first create fur.Everything was rendered in one go, no layers, and the fur is influenced by FG .Also im using secondary diffuse bounces.

Speaking Fur and Mental Ray. Is there a way to render the shadows casted on the Fur -and self shadowing as well in a separate pass ?
