Roman 12-22-2002, 04:03 PM Here is some work I'm doing for my portfolio(/reel). At last some free time so I could do the ears and some intensive tweaking. Started at the beginning of the livingtoon challenge, but I did stop because of a shortage of time.(also it became to "realistic for the challenge)
It's my first try at a realistic head, and I'm quite happy with the way it's going. It's supposed to be me. A bit bald at the moment. (have to think about how to do (facial)hair, shagfur or txtured planes)
Still have to do some tweaking also (specially the corners of the mouth, can't get them right..) Next I will do some realistic eye balls. And after that maybe txturing(don't like that) or maybe maybe a body (probally not since I got some other things that need to be created for my reel and new shortmovie).
Also has anyone a good formula for a skin shader? I now use a oren-nayar-blinn shader, but cant get a good result without post collorcorrection and pulling around with curves in photoshop. So help would be apriciated, so is C&C!
(software used is 3dmax 4.2)

No c&c at all? Seems to happen to everything I post. :hmm: I can't believe it's that bad. Anyways, here is the wire.
Still in search of a good shader solution!:)

not to shabby!
i guess your not worried about all those triangles? :)

Frankly i think it's pretty good as is !
i would have had the same crits as you already pointed out about the mouth ! The texture would indeed be important : the problem with oren-nayar shaders seems that ( at least in my recent face texturing experience) they tend to wash out the details, like in the nose area of your character (could be due to lighting problems though).
But you might want to clean up some areas a bit edge loops for example above his brow etc...
It quite good anyway ! keep it up !

Thanks for the comments! :)
Hmm, not to worried about the triangles. Most of them are located on save places wich won't be animated to much, I think (also I wont be doing any animation I think).
Still cant get the mouth corners right, although the wireframe looks ok to me over there.. I have looked upon some wireframes of other models, and they all seem to have the same wireframe structure at that point. So it must be something simple, I don't know.
Material is still a prob. And you are right about the loss of detail when using the oren-nayar. Subtle details are lost... (it's to flat or something..) So I prefer my viewport look. :D
Don't know about the edgeloops, at this moment this is the best I can come up with, within this structure. (edgeloops are such hard puzzles sometimes..) Thanks for the coments again! :)
Still doing some tweaking. Tomorrow I'll be adding new material (innermouth, teeth and some testing at how to do the hair...)

Ok, I've been tweaking the chin area en pulled a bit around the mouth corners. Did a simple morph target test, just to see how it could turn out (edgeloops enzo). I started placing the hair structure (eyebrows and other facial hair), but I'm not sure if planes are going to be sufficient:hmm:... hmm and I'd hate to use a shag plug-in (since it takes quite long before understanding it I've heard..)
Well here are some screencaps.:)
(could someone at least tell me why the amount of replies is so low? that way I could work on it..)

also did some ear tweaking, I forgot:

Hey it turne d out even better !
love the expressions !
Did you use the standart max morph targets ?
The lighting and shading whatever seems clearer this way ..could it be because it's inside a viewport ?
One thing i didn't notice before the outline of the midle of the "nose bone' ( don't know how to call it , the area between the brow and the nose itself) seems not as clearly defined as, say the ears and eyes ( both great). One thing i thing may be due to lighting is the fact that his mouth seems washed out (ie no shadows etc)
as far as using a "shag" plugin goes, i think it may be worth learning how to use one (always is worth learning :) if you aim for something fotoreal .. personally i think it already looks great as is !very expressive !
About not geting much replies : yes that can be depressing at times (having the same problem with my "japansese actor's head thread"..among others) but don't let that get you down, what you are doing is great !!! keep at it :!!:applause: :applause:

Hej, thanks!: Still alot needs to be done, but it will be finsished ones. :D
Jep just the standard morph target thingy, nothing fancy. And its indeed a screencapture. I've been working on the nose (with the help of some comments by my girlfriend and mother, really helpful) and now the nose should be better defined.(next to being a better copy of the real thing).
I've been doing some more tweaking around the nose and also the mouth (needed alot of tweaking, cause it didn'nt look like mine). And now the face is done, and I'm happy with the result and resemblence with me.
So I began doing some testing with the hair. Shag:hair ain't that hard as I thought it would be, it just takes alot of time. I still have to find out how to influence it by the use of black and white txture maps. Cause the hairline aint right (based on the lines made bij the mesh underneath). But hopefully I'll get that right soon. (will be gone for the comming days)
In the meantime I'll be making some nice eyes.
Comments and Crits alwasy apreciated!:wavey:

I'm back, and here is some progress on my hair. It's quite hard to get it right.
I'll look around and see if I can find some clear foto's.

Here is the last update I'll be doing for now. Maybe I'll pick up this project in the future. But for now this is the last render. I'm back to creating "fantasy" characters again, much more creative freedom.(and much more fun :)) Learned alot while doing this portret, so.:wavey:
