Title: Summer comes..
Name: Natascha Roeoesli
Country: Greece
Software: Photoshop
..hopefully soon.
This started out as a sketch and color try out for the last addition to my season series.
I didn't really feel like starting on it but I felt like painting something that helps me get over my longing for summer, sun and warmth.
The more I doodled around and tried out color and lightning I knew it will be the finish to my series. The format is different and I will adjust and repaint the older three to match this in size and quality/style.
This is the first painting I tried to be a bit more brave with light and shadows.
Other then that - I was looking for a warm, sunny and soft airy feeling. I wanted her to have pretty red cheeks..even a slight hint of a bit too much sun..
Other elements are in this that I myself again link to summer..but I let you do your own interpretation :)
Hope you enjoy and thanks for looking :)
And since so much detail gets lost in the smaller size:
100% Cutouts
http://tascha.ch/artwork/gallery/closeups/closeups_summer.jpg
25% Cutouts
http://tascha.ch/artwork/gallery/closeups/closeups_summer25.jpg
A lot of details get lost and look quite wonky on the smaller size.

u knew i love this~i'm just gonna say it again~the defocusing of the forground petals are definitely a very nice touch and the translucency of her dress is awesome, love the blueish hue that reflected on her dress as well,u have this GI/finalgather kinda lighting in ur painting.
*****'s
Hey again tascha. Great work, love it. Really like that saturated red with the white. Blur works well. Love the lighting too (particularly on the dress) :)

thehe.. I commented this before it even appeared to here :p
Love the mood and warm feeling of it. The girl's expression is very interesting, it doesn't reveal almost anything, but the same time she looks very sensitive and mysterious. That's the way I see her..
Love the details and that distant balloon against blue sky. Lovely!

I feel such Harmony and peace...... is so relaxing..... your art really showed/transmited your message and here's the old say "A picture worth more than a thousand words".

Muchas gracias - I am really happy if I achieved that. Funny thing though - I have solely used the hard edged brush for this except for some single hair strands where I have used the airbrush for the first time in ages :)
Aridiel
Thanks! I was pretty much experimenting with painting the depth of field instead of just using the blur tool. It works very nice while using the hard edged brush at very low flow.
Also still trying to find a good way betwen detailing and NOT overdetailing.
RiuhongTang
Haha - I guess her face is a matter of taste. You would have prefered an asian looking girl? ;) To be honest I am quite happy how her face turned out. It is pretty much how I wanted it to be: Looking somewhat young and old the same time..with a strong face and somewhat glowing. After all the saying that "She is in the summer of her life" pretty much means she might still look young but is already strong and grown up - knowing where she is going in life. Ok, I just love to put a lot of metaphors into my paintings..
waheednasir
Hello waheed :) Thank you! It's an unusually sweet palette for me isn't it? ;)

Kirsi, hi again! Yup, thanks for the guestbook entry and the compliment :]
Her expression, I tried to go for a sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight hint of a smile and a look like: "Hey, this is an invitation. Even if you don't want to join me - summer is coming anyway" Hehe I know - kind of wierd huh? I can't always explain the decisions I make :D
midcgi
Such a wonderful compliment - many thanks. I know most people probably think - yeah just another girl painting but I really do try to make every aspect fit the idea I had in my mind. Every little decision I make has a meaning - at least to me

Stunning! Very good work, I really like it. One comment could be that the image is too high for my resolution and that the extra height doesn't add anything to it... but that's madatory, it's a lovely image.

Thank you :) I really enjoy painting semi transparent clothing lately..it's actually pretty easy if you get the hang out of it (and happy accidents help too ;))
Poshspice
Aly, thank you so much (also for the guestbook entry). This is the second piece (next to my unfinished dragongirlthingie) that I painted semi transparent clothing. It's actually quite easy once you have a good base going. I was already asked to make a quick tutorial about this. Truth is I am pretty much letting it develop (much like the fabric tutorial I made for the 2D Artist Magazine). There are also some happy accidents woven in there. Mainly leftovers from the actual speed color test and sketching that was underneath.
I think I already mentioned how much I love that devil girl of yours. Why is it not on the forums Mister?
Gonna take a short break - I'll be back later (and thanks so much for the frontpage plug! just realized that <3)

Deserved to be on the frontpage :)
Wow! Your mastery of colour and tone is stunning. Not many paintings take me away somewhere else when I look at them but this one definately does.
I nearly didn't click on the frontpage thumbnail because I thought it was just another portrait study, glad I did though!

I forgot: Aly I uploaded a slightly bigger version just for you :D The link is somewhere a bit earlier I think :)
Opeth
Thanks - that's an even bigger compliment if the painting actually made you comment this time :] And your avatar always reminds me of a one of the German Big Brother inhabitents who was in one of the first showings of that show in Germany. Can't remember his name though.
JulienHo
It's always nice to hear that something can actually evoke some feelings. Spring and Autumn are already done (Winter too but I am really going over all of them again..) They are in my cgportfolio :)
destroyfred
(hehe what a funny nick) Thanks a lot! I was a bit insecure about the composition..but I really wanted to work with a narrow high format here. To give her even more air to breath and have the watchers view raise up in the sky and into the clouds.
digital-bobert
Bobby, thank you very much :)
sandrum
I think some of my problems is that I tend to overdetail things - and it just doesn't end up well. Like I mentioned before I tried to find a good balance in this. It's not optimal yet though but I am a bit more happy with how this turned out detail wise. Thanks for the compliment!
Xeophex
So funny! We were just watching the latest episode of Lost yesterday (damn I love that show, they definately know how to keep us on our toes..) and I really love that actress' face. I think she is really beautiful. However I don't think she looks like her?
sirBS
Thank you - hehe your avatar sure glows more then her face ;)
Jeroen Stout
yeah - I was pretty sure someone would mention the height. It's a give or take I guess. The idea was to make all the four seasons this height and change the colors on the sky slowly over the four paintings (like they would be one big painting cut into four pieces). I was actually considering cropping it for the upload here but it is actually part of my intention and the idea behind the painting to have the view go up into the sky (following the balloon and into the clouds). I also think it makes it more airy and gives her even more space to breath.
Abyss
Thank you so much. I really worked hours on her face to try to get the look I wanted. I am happy it doesn't just look blant :]
rubenmontecinos
oih - I am not quite sure what to answer to such a big compliment really. Muchas Gracias :)

Alexandra, aww damn - I tried :( I hoped it would bring at least some warmth to all the not so sunny countries (Switzerland still has tons of snow too :/)) And that must be a lovely dress. I had a smiliar one like this when I was younger..I plan to buy something similar once it gets warmer here too.
Thanks again so much to everyone for the feedback <3

I just fell in love with this peice of art. When I look at it, it takes me to a special place where things are cool, fresh, young and calm. I just made a quick poem that was inspired by this painting.

A summer sky so pure and clear
Where heaven is a green field
She is there, the angel with tear"

Theres a wonderful light airy feel to this one Natascha, and the girl is superb. The photographic influences of your parents are present in the blurred foreground petal.
'Promise of better days' are in her eyes and the awesome blue you've selected for the sky.
The glowing health in the face also lifts the air. This one is such a triumph for you.
Well done.

Paul, thank you. I am definately trying to find a way to put the focus on special parts in a painting with my knowledge of photography. I haven't taken pictures in ages myself but it's definately a way of making the DoF work. (Besides the use of saturated/less saturated colors and value differences). I have been reading up on so many theory lately that I am starting to think too much.
Specially with some of my paintings before I have gotten all confused about weather to paint what would be right theoretically or what would look good. Also still trying to find a good balance there :)
Thanks for the comments everyone :D

Irate Velociraptor
That's quite a nickname there :D
There is a little blending tutorial on my website but basically there are quite a few different ways depending on what kind of look you are going for.
I am mostly going over the parts I want to blend with a hard edged brush with one of the two colors first very lightly. Then start color picking from the in between hues on the go until I have the effect or amount of blending I want. Lately I have used the hard edged brush without the size set to pen pressure and afterwards to hard edged with size set to pen pressure to work out details.
This one of course has much softer blending then some of my other paintings for example, to create a softer overall feeling for the character :)

Great composition and colors.
Simple but powerful background in relation with the composition and the red of the flowers. It feels like the ballons reflect the light to her skin and backwards. I can feel the summer in that picture ...and its beautiful like the weather today. I'm fascinated of how you show the beauty of a woman and in every painting in a diffrent way some how. Beautiful, I especially love the bottom of the painting - the material, it's transparency. :)
Did you notice that her left eye is a bit croocked? It bothers me a bit, but besides that it's lovely, the athmosphere is so summer-like :)))

Thank you! haven't seen anything new from you in a while. Post more - I really love your style - very inspiring :)

That's a wonderful compliment. It's hard to evoke feelings with a painting or images for that matter. I am glad you enjoyed it.
marcelbaumann
Marcel hi! Hope we can get together again next time I am in Switzerland, it was sure a blast meeting up in Luzern :D
I am really flattered thank you. I am always worried that my paintings drift towards the "pretty girl only" paintings. I am raelly trying to give each of the characters their own personality. It was kind of interesting to see the peytra girls face and the summer girls face next to eachother on my website as thumbnails.
I was kind of happy to see that both kind of show the personality I wanted them to have.
velvetta
thank you! Me too, I already hunted Athens for a similar skirt or dress but couldn't really find one yet :D
Taurik Hassenik
haha - not quite sure what could have given you that impression but that's a funny sidenote!
Iiiga
thanks alot Liiga. I didn't make it either btw (the topic we discussed the other day ;)) oh and see you in digibrush!

thank you - that was pretty much one of my personal challenges in this

thank you :]

I'll be trying - thanks for commenting :)
abielmuren
Why, thank YOU for commenting :) It's very nice to read what kind of thoughts people have when looking at summer. And sorry but I have to disappoint you. She is fully fictional and made up.

hah you are the third person to mention that. I really like the actress but other then a cute little nose and curley long hair I can't really see much of a likeness :)
DarkSkills
thank you kindly :]

Ah you work with Corel Painter? I tried it and used PS and Painter both at some point. But it acted up strange and screwed up my computer - I don't have it on my HD anymore.
It wouldn't really make a big difference for me I think. 99% of the time I am using the hard edged brush anyway and I hate using filters - they make me feel like I am not in full control of what I am doing.
Blaschke
Thanks for the compliment :)
Djampa
what exactly do you mean by "weight" feeling?

Thanks a lot to you too :D

haha - well she is definately coming towards you slowly..not sure what she is going to do ;)

it's unusally sweet for me yes, but kinda fitting, I think? Thank you for the compliment

Very much appreciated, thanks!

thank you - I am always fighting a bit with creating the overall atmosphere - but I think I am slowly improving :]

thanks Alexandru!
Katea
Hey Katerzyna, duh damn, really? I think I switched this about 200 times during painting. I guess you can get used to off parts like if you just look at it long enough >_<
I am going to check it, though. Thanks for the feedback!
Phew, I hope I didn't forget anyone (well anybody else then JM (sorry!)

Very nice picture as you already know from the number of replies you had !
I'll be one of the few to dare a little critic : I find that there is too much sky. I don't think it would hurt the image if the sky was cropped quite a bit, on the contrary it would put the accent even more on the girl which is so beautifully executed. And even if you cropped it quite a bit, there would still be room for some balloons flying away in the background.

You are actually not the only one mentioning that :)
If you look at the painting just like this I do agree - however I had my reasons for adding a higher format.
One of them is the fact that I am going to make a quadrych (or whatever that term is) out of all the season paintings. They will be linked and look like one painting but seperated into 4 prints with the sky changing with the corresponding season.
I was actually considering cropping it for uploads to communities but decided to leave it at the actual composition because there were also other reasons I made it that high.
Probably also a matter of taste :)

Oh, I see ! Sorry, I was too lazy to go over all the replies here !

03-27-2006, 09:22 PM
ah - no worries please :)
like I said - I was a bit unsure to upload the actual size too and pretty sure a few or even many people would mention the format.

By far the face is incredibly realistic. I can't say the same towards the bottom half of her body where her skirt is but irregardless the detail on the face is what gets me. Great work!

hey tascha,
this things totally blown me away. this piece is an absolute 180 from what i'd expect from you. i love everything about it - the tones, the wind, the baloons blowing around - everything. the girls a tad bit tall from my POV, but apart from that, i wouldnt mind a print.
and here i am just dragging myself to a tablet - i have so much further to go...blargh.

The semi-transparent material, is the greatest I've every seen.
Don't know your workflow but the lighting of the material is deadly acurate, with strokes that seem really dynamic and fast, no hint of tinkering for hours just to get it right.
Looking forward to your next piece !

I found this artwork very beautiful and sensitive. Thing that impressed me the most is atmosphere and details combined with soft tehnique. Angle and focus are interesting part of work. We all can learn from this drawing! :applause: Excellent!
