hey

I'm very new at DF. I'm learning DF through the free tuts on eyeons site. But am stumped early in the game here.

I have a Background(640x480) and a Foreground(687x347) merged. I want to render out an avi at the res of my Foreground(687x347) layer.

Do I crop my BG layer?

The frame format in the Prefs doesn't seem to matter either.

If I render out with the BG on the avi is 640x480, if I don't have the BG on the avi it's 687x347.

What determines my res of my output?

Also my bins don't work. It's says "library on Localhost" and if I try to drag files into the bins nothing happens.

thanks for your time.

Hi,

Think of the background as a piece of paper you're drawing on. You're drawing, however, is bigger than the piece of paper. Therefore, if you pick up your drawing when you're done some of it will be left on the tabletop :)

So to answer your question, yes, the BG determines your output resolution.

One way around that is making a BG (using the BG tool) in your desired output resolution, merge the BG you've got on top of that one, and your FG on top of that one again. That may not be the most efficient solution (I don't have your comp in front of me) but that might help you to understand the situation better...

Cheers.

thanks mate.

That helps heaps.

I'm coming from an After effects background where the comp is like a window. It's impossible to render anything that's not viewable in the window.

Your paper and table example is a good one.

How about the bins?

Would you by any chance know what I could be doing wrong there?

Click on localhost in the left pane of the bins window, now right click on the right pane and make a new folder. Now you should be able to right click the folder and "add new item"
