Hey guys, I'm looking for some help for 3dstudio5.

I'm working on a weapon for Operation Flashpoint, and I've completed the top LOD, but now I need to make some lower LODs and I was hoping to avoid the whole UVW unwrapping process again.

I don't think my technique for unwrapping is very professional, it takes me quite a while to get it done well.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how I can reduce the sides of cylinders, but somehow keep the UVW projection from being distorted?

A lot of my unwraps are manually adjusted, so it wouldn't be so easy to just unwrap all the parts again.

I have a hope that there is some way I can easily transfer UV coords to brand new shapes... :hmm: what are my chances?

I used to use the [Acquire] feature of the UVW Map modifier, but it doesn't work right if you edit the coords with UVW Unwrap afterwards.

Either way, here's my SR-47 with Trijicon ACOG scope. The SR-47 is a redesigned M4, chambered in 7.62x39mm, and made to accept AK-47 mags. The idea is that US special operatives can resupply from dropped enemy ammo, or enemy caches (especially in Afganistan's cave networks).

You can see a bit mor, including in-game screenshots at Baconbomb Modworks (http://www.baconbomb.com/modworks).

since i dont use 3ds max i cant tell you if theres something to do that

but some programs(1 that i know of <Cinema 4D>) does not fix the uvw map to the polygons, it just projects it onto the model(think a projector vs paint)

i noticed this difference a while ago when i went to edit one of my older models

Hey dude...I use Maya myself, but the principle should be the same. If you delete any edges/verts that are not on the borders of your UV maps, you shouldn't have to remap. Just go round the weapon deleting edges etc. and your mapping should be ok. There will be the odd bit you have to make from scratch and re-map, but not the whole thing.

Max 5 comes with multires, which does what you are askin.... it may however produce undeisreable results given the exactness of what you have there, though it does work rather well...
