View Full Version : WIP Creature
JBoskma 03-24-2006, 01:17 AM Hi everybody,
I'm working on this 3D creature, which will be for my demo reel. I was inspired by a picture of a plucked chicken, and this is what I came up with so far. I'm trying to get this model to a hyperreal level. I will be using Zbrush to paint the bump map, after I finished the geometry and got him unwrapped. C&C are welcome. Thanks

Really cool creature! I've been studying different shaved animals that normally have feathers or fur and I've been really inspired. Sometimes the coolest musculature is hidden by a lot of fluff. Can't wait to see the textures.

Very nice work Jelmer. I think going with the feet from your concept is the way to go. Maybe the folds above the shoulder need some work. To me they don't look natural. Where they meet the folds coming from the armpit is a bit odd. Great work on the head and beak. The folds on the neck are beautiful! You have an eye for details my friend. Anyway, here is to the long nights ahead...

I love your drawings and the concept is unique.
You have reached that high level of detail already in terms of modeling. nice flesh feeling too.
I can see brilliant future of you. Keep it up~
How are you going to texture that?
Are you planning on making furs or features on that?

Wow... great concept and modeling.
It's already very detailed... no need to do a lot z-brushing I guess :)
The only thing i can critique so far is that it would be very tedious to setup your character for animation. There are a lot of points to weight.
Great work man!

Lovin the concept..its original and not seen at all really on Cgtalk. With the SSS I wouldnt suggest making the beak that pinkish tone. I would get it to be the color of the beak a little more. Looks like a tan or light bahge.

AMAZING!!! Very beautiful work, very good anatomy :) . As for feathers, I would leave it mostly featherless with a few random feathers here and there. Again, amazing work, both the model and the concept art. Keep it up I look forward to seeing where this goes :)

wow thanks guys. I'm planning to fnish the legs this weekend.
J.Gaeta: Talking about good eye. You are totaly right about the armpit, it's looking a bit wonky. Thanks man.
Rjays: Thanks for the kind words :) I'm planning on using xsi hair to give him short hair, something that looks like goosebumped armhair. In the neck for sure, and on some other places. No feather probably.
Jimpanse: Thanks! I'm not planning to use this character for animation, but I've already trown in a simple rig + weight setup, to pose him a bit. You are right btw, it is a hell of a job if you want to do this for animation purposes.
Agasco: Hey man, how are you doing? Good probably, your reel was awesome. Thanks btw!
Slice56: Hey man, long time no see. I think it's the Organized Crime mod, you were working on with me. Thanks for your reply, still at rockstar I see, keep it up my friend!

Metamesh: Thanks man, I'm using softimage xsi :) And yeah, that sss render was totaly inspired on your new splash page. Glad you like it, your work is awesome.
Learner86: That is indeed mental ray. It's the standard softimage renderer.
FlyingHawk: I've used max before I went to school, here they learned me to work with XSI, and I will never go back, if possible. I prefer XSI now above max, it's a bit faster, easier and stronger in my opinion.
Thanks for the kind words people!

Right..mental ray became the standard xsi renderer since v5.0 didn't it?
I hope autodesk will do something like that with maya too.

Superb modeling! you VFS guys are on CG steroids or something arent you?
Can you tell us a bit about your modeling method, do you model the base at a slightly lower rez, and then subdivide it and work in the detail and tweak the topology. Or do you really just model poly by poly at that high a rez?
Cheers

Thanks for all the kind replies people
-Kjaxx: thanks man. As stated earlier. I was heavily inspired by the gorgeous work of metamesh :) Credit to him.
- Mad|Dawg: About my modeling method. I model poly by poly. I think some people like to call it patch-modeling. I didn't subdivide, I build most of the geometry by extruding edges and creating polygons. Then I come back in later in some areas to clean things up or cut in the additional details, needed.
- Wizzi: No feathers. Just gross bumpy chicken skin and a lot of folds here and there.
The legs and additional modeling took a little longer then expected. Got basicly everything there now. Almost ready to get this guy unwrapped! (garrrgh) Here's a little update, C&C much appreciated!

Thanks guys. I've altered quite a few things today. Changes made:
- Shortened legs
- Thickened up the legs
- Moved knees a bit
- Squashed feet height
- gave some parts a fleshier feeling.
- Made the for and lower arms a bit longer
Right now I feel I'm done with the geometry, and that I'm ready to unwrap my creature. I've also worked on a lighting setup a little today. Here are the updated shots.

P.S. what term are you in and can you give us a taste of what you would like to add to your reel?
JBoskma
04-02-2006, 09:14 PM
=BlackNull=: Hey man, thanks! You're right about the crease, but I think it'll look a lot softer once the bumpmap breaks up the light a bit :)
3DBradley: I'm in term 4 right now. Still 2 terms to go after this. This is my first demo reel character, which is called the secondary model, because mostly people improve a lot while working on their reels. So good chance that models after this will be a bit better. For a taste what I'll be adding to my reel, I can give you a preview of my project after this.
It's a humanoid character, which i call homo predatorus. Where we are homo sapiens, the thinking man, this is the killing man. I kinda combined gorilla and baboon features with a human, to create this. I noticed while working on this creature, that it's possible to improve to concept and add a lot of cool stuff along the way, hopefully that will happen to this one too. Here's the concept work that I've done so far:
http://jelmer.keurigonline.nl/profile_final_D5.jpg
http://jelmer.keurigonline.nl/human_all.jpg
This is a photoshop collage, made from a human skull and a gorilla skull.

- Boney parts (2000x2000 px)
- Slimey parts (1000x1000 px)
- Eyeballs (512x512 px)

btw. have u used a cassawary as reference at all? Reminds me of one a lot as far as the head's concerned and I thought you might want to reference them for your bump as well as the condor :) Just a thought. Keep up the good work J. :arteest:

Great stuff!, -the upper beek has a clear distinction where the beek meets the flesh, but the lower does'nt. (eagles have this seperation, but your creature may not) just a thought.

ced66: Thanks I think you were right that it looked a bit flat. I think it was mainly the lighting playing part in that. I've altered the lights a bit, trying to do the volume more justice. I'm not using displacement maps btw. Just bump.
Intervain: Hey you! Never saw those birds, googled em up. Awesome. Might use them for color reference. Thanks for your reply girl :)
qwed88: You're right. I want the skin to slightly get thinner as it wraps on to the beak. I had a hard time achieving this with bump. If I decide to give this guy color, it will be obvious. If you are curious, google up maribou storks. That's what I'm going for.
Fiftyfive: Couldn't help it buddy.. Cgtalk converts our ~ icon into a *, messing up the urls. I think it's fixed now though. Gonna give it a try :)
Here's the 'finished' bumpmap. I'm not sure if I'm going to give this guy color yet. I might rush some color through, or do it later. Anyway, c & c welcome as always

Looking really good Jelmer, i still think you should give it a shot at coloring him, it's not like your painting skills aren't up to the task.
And there are more than enough people around to give you help with the render tree, it's definetly worth taking a closer look, cause if you combine artistic skill like your's with technical knowledge on shaders, it'll become better than you can imagine.

Wow.....This model is looking marvelous Jelmer. I think it's awesome that you can create a concept and produce an exact model from that concept. The detailed anatomical structure is really working........ Textures can make or break a model, but you're a very talented artist. I'd give a swing at it if you have the time....Keep it up man

wonderful work Jelmer!!
can you tell me if you work all the skin detail in zbrush as a highpoly mesh and then you use the displacement map as a bump map in XSI?...or you use the bump map material in zbrush to add the skin detail?
thanks
Texlon
04-16-2006, 06:57 PM
Incredible detailed and awesome concept design. The bump maps add alot to the "realism" of the concept and make it very believable.
I would love to know how you were able to use serveral maps in combination with zbrush. I have a few models that I want to detail in zbrush but one map, even at 4kx4k is not enough for me. I wonder how you manage to get good blendings/transitions between the different maps. Could you give me a brief explaination of the process? Would be great.
Cheers,
Leon

Texlon: I've just used the projection master in ZBrush. Allthough I use different maps, the model is still one piece. I just stamp the skin texture on it, and blur it a bit. Works fine, and no seams :)
yolao: I've used no displacement maps. This is just the bump map you're seeing. It's not a high poly mesh but an exported texture image.
Forgot to show these. Head concepts, for those interested :) Thanks everybody!
