View Full Version : Would you take...A Gnomon Dvd Tutorial Or A Gnomon Class?
hotsoup 03-24-2006, 12:55 AM I'm a newbie. I started playing with Maya at home on and off for quite a bit. I finally took an Intro class at Gnomon this winter. Modelling is fun stuff. I'd love to learn more about Maya and modelling.
This is the deal. In the Intro class, some people are good as if they don't need the class. Now the class is over. I wanna take on Poly Modeling I. Here comes my conern: I wanna go into the class and look like an idoiot not knowing anything; it's actually ok to look like an idiot. Hey if I knew how to do it all, I wouldn't be taking the class, right? But then, I do feel like that I could benefit more if I had more knowledge/experience on Maya.
Question, should I skip a quarter, buy a Gnomon DVD, and play with it...
AND take on Poly Modeling I NEXT quarter?

We are in the exact same boat, my friend. I was able to take a class (not gnomon) last semester (finally) after playing with 3d software for years.
My wife refers to me as the "NTL" - non-traditional learner. It was her derogatory term for old farts in class when she went to college. I say don't skip a quarter - if you can afford it, take the course now and push yourself. For me, personally, I always improve much faster when I'm suffering, trying to keep up with talented youth. It's a funny thing - I think I learn slower, but at a much deeper level than I did when I was younger. Go for it.

Don't skip IMO. Just dive right in. Just read up a little bit about poly modeling before you start the class so you're not in too incredibly deep. Good luck!

I'm a current extension student taking basically a full courseload for this coming term and the last two (and more after). The expense is pretty great but the classes are almost all awesome and there's just no substitute for being in a lab full of people who know a lot and want to teach and learn from one another. Just about anybody who knows how to rotate a camera in maya is prepared for poly modeling I at gnomon. It moves fast but the class sizes and the mentality of the students and faculty there make it so no one gets left behind so long as they're willing to speak up. If you're going to buy a DVD and take poly I you might as well buy a few DVDs and go straight to Poly II. Just my opinion though.
Hope I'll see you there.

go take the class....you can watch the videos for free in their TV/entertainment room =)
They have every DVD for you to borrow to watch there. Plus, taking the class gives you the benefits of asking questions.

What poly class are you gonna be in? I have heard great things about Kevin Hudson and I will be in his class this coming quarter. I've also heard alot of not so great things about the other poly guy. If we have the same class, I could loan you a few of my gnomon modeling DVDs.
Let me know,
