View Full Version : N-gon support for Riptide in R9+...
Keith Young 03-23-2006, 11:52 AM There's a new version of my Riptide .obj import/export plugin available for R9.102 or later which now supports N-gons (polygons with more than 4 sides).
You can find the plugin at Spanki's Prop Shop (http://www.skinprops.com) on the C4D page.
Cheers,
- Keith

It just took me a while to get around to it :). The Mac version should be available in a day or two.

I actually fixed a few other things in this version.. here's the update notes from the included readme file:
v1.2
--------
- Riptide will now Import/Export N-gons* (polygons with >4 sides). There are new import/export options to create N-gons**.
* NOTE: N-gons are only supported in R9+. This plugin requires R9.102 or later (the R9.102 update is available as a free update from R9.0 at Maxon's website).
** NOTE: The .obj file format does not support N-gons with 'holes' in them (like a window cut out of a wall panel), so if you end up with strangly formed or overlapping polygons, go back to your original document and look for and fix any holes before exporting (this plugin does not fix these for you like the built-in exporter does).
- Fixed an export bug related to not having uv-mapped a mesh before exporting.
- Fixed an export crash bug related to using BhodiNut Shaders.

Fixed a couple bugs in the previous version... if you downloaded v1.2, you should go download v1.2a
Thanks,

i am experiencing difference between normal merge *obj file.
and via riptide.
no matter what setting . it seems the c4d import gives better quality.
no offence. i just would like it to work.

Hi,
does this version of Riptide export normals without prior existance of a normal tag on the exported object?
Oh i got to try this out tonight - thanks for the generous gift Keith!

Hi Alex... the difference is in how the 'Phong Tag' is set up. If you load a 'Cube' mesh (or any other mesh with sharp edges) with Riptide, it will 'look' worse than loading it via C4D's built-in importer. If you are importing boxy meshes, you need to adjust the 'Phong Tag' values (like be sure to enable 'Angle Limit' on that tag after you import). After that, they will look exactly the same.

No. But if you look on the download page for Riptide, there's a free plugin that will create a Normal Tag for you.

I just uploaded another bug fix version v1.2c to my site (http://www.skinprops.com).
This one (hopefully the final one) fixes a crash bug if you export with 'Export Normals' disabled. If you downloaded either of the earlier versions you should go grab the update... sorry for the trouble.
Now that I think all the bugs are squashed, I'll try to get the Mac version compiled in the next day or two.
