I've thought about the image when I read the imformation of the CGChallenge, but so sorry I delayed some time for the job reason.
From today I will show you the image I drew before and I'll draw after. Welcome you giving the valuable advice.
It's so excited as I thought the scene that the character will face. So I directly drafted the Sketch on PHOTOSHOP and it's very rough. This is one of my habit of drawing, yet I weren't always acting like that. Just sometimes I felt too detailed in the fore period would let you lose the passion in the later. I like adding some temporary thought into the image in the process of drawing. Though it will make me fall in a terrible fix to deal with the whole effect at last. But I still delight in it and never get tired of it.

Great sketches and colour studies...
It looks quite abstract when looking close up, but made complete sense when you look at the thumbnail.
Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing how this turns out... :) :)

Journey is often full of danger and difficulties instead of smooth all the way. What I want to describe is a ship in the voyage meeting the misfortune that no one ever met before. Sounds so incredible! :) Maybe here you could see nothing at all, don't worry, just like the journey, surprise always appears at last...

First I'll depict the waves. It's not the common ones, but composed of fish-man troops. Also they are not the fish-man in fact but the water in the shape of fish-man!

Here need to show the "water surface". I designed fish-man roughly and invert the image, adjust the layers to color dodge then put it on the canvas.
At last drew the details.

All these incredible things are met by a sailing ship in a long voyage. We can imagine what will happen next. And the people who witness the misfortune will leave the strongest impression through life. Human beings appear to small and helpless. I divided the whole image into three parts to promote the plots: the sinking ship in the distance, the fleeing ship in the middle and close up two people fleeing and falling into the water, one breathes deeply and another is frightened to death.

This is completely OUTSTANDING!
Fantastic image and very well thought through.
As I look at the little guy (The dark set of blobs in the bottom... in the sea.. that s a human right? If not two?) has done serious amount of swimming considering the ships distance and the weather.
But I can understand your reasons of such a placement. It will add so much to the story telling.
My only comment is more like a question actually.
In the areas where the waters darken on the left bottom corner seem to suggest that there is a shore, or that the water is shallow there...
Is it such?
If not... I guess you particularly didn't want to create both a reason for a shade and/or consider a retracting arc-wave on it some where in order for it to be able to be a part of such a wavy night or not... right?
(Because from someone who has such a successful depiction of a monstrous wave, I wouldn't expect a lack of observation)
So that just brings me to ask if you are intending on making the whole sea shake from the battle, Or just that particular mound. (Such as to emphasize the magnificence this supernatural activity? And not to kind of simbolise a storm into a sailors myth)
I am simply enjoying keeping the image open in another window and watching over it.
It's just amazing... and very, very beautiful.
Will definitely want to follow up on this one.
BEST of luck

Those horse sketches are just amazing! Your drawing is really spectacular. Compositionally, I'm having a bit of trouble knowing where to look. There are so many things going on all over the canvas and all about eh same size, my eye is just bounging around a lot and isn't naturally settling anyhwere. I'm not sure whether it was your intent, to make it so chaotic, maybe it just fits the theme of what you're trying to convey. But anyhow, thought I'd just share that thought. Good luck with the rest of it, there are really some amazing details here.

Looking good. I think this is going to be a great piece when it's done. My only comment is I think the focal point of the image is a little ambigous. I'm not sure what the main subject here is. The water has a nice feel to it and the canvas looks deep though. Great job so far.

TO:BlackDidThis Till now everything is still uncertain to what you have seen. I'll change most of the things now you've seen for the final image.
The darken areas on the left bottom corner I want to design two extremely fatigued people whose lifeboat has sinked. They've used up their strength on a floating wood and kept screaming towards the little ship which was hard to protect itself distance.
hdhcg
05-15-2006, 02:02 PM
TO:walrus , anticz and QUILLS You are quite right that the focal points of the image are too dispersed now. I'll change it in the future. I think I'll focalize the point on two powers, cloud and sea, facing each other. No one knows why they fight again and again. Actually they are proceeding an epic great war. (Here I humanize them to avoid the single theme that only describes just sinking ships and fleeing people under a storm)
So my feeling is, a war between cloud and sea is arising! Black clouds get lower and lower to cover the sea, and the waves raise higher and higher against the sky. They'll duel in death. Well the Journey happens to meet them. Journey is just beginning and so is the misfortune. Could you agree with me?
The emphasis of the image is the third power metaphorize in it. That is the strong conviction of human beings to surive from the war between two powerful forces. Though the beings look so small and weak, almost have no chance to win. But I believe they'll be the last winner. Or they'll disappear in the sea for ever.... That depends on each watcher's imaging. Hope everyone who see the image may give it a beautiful end.

As "Eye Candy" as it may apear, as "Busy" as it may apear; I have to confess that I loved this image and I am definately enjoying following up on it.
For a big change in my usual nature... I have nothing to criticise
the adition of the boat saved everything... Well no not everything.. unfortunately it saved no one... I meant the image. An adition could have worked only so well.

One day in 1502, a great sailor's standing on the ship and enjoying the sunny weather and quiet sea. Suddenly a gale's blowing and the sky's getting dark. The compass stopped working,a flame came down from the sky,and a wave 1 00 to 200 feet high carried the ship about a mile away. This ship lost control and be pushed by the wave. Fortunately it didn't sink after several days' jolt. And so strange that the storm stopped in a sudden and the weather return to calm and tranquil quickly. The great sailor is just Christopher Columbus. And this sea area called Bermuda triangle from then.
This story gives me inspiration of artistic creation. In my image I humanizes nature into fish-man waves and knights clouds. They are the gods of sea and sky and proceeding an epic war that never ends even to date.
Compare to the strong and powerful nature, human is so weak and small. But humans never stop the feet of exploration. Till now almost every inch of the earth has left the footprints of theirs. Even the universe and other stars have been visited by them. Human's spirit of exploration is worth admiring and just because of it, the people's society could keep advancing and become stronger and stronger. But at the same time, nature is losing her mestery and dignity little by little.
I try to express the theme of the nature's mystery and human's exploration spirit. The sea is so magnificent and dangeous when she whips up huge waves to the sky. And the knights clouds are changeful and glorious riding on the horses. People on the ship is going to explore the unknow areas, unfortunately, they meet the war between the sea and sky at the very beginning. They are struggling and trying best to keep advancing. Maybe they will arrive at the destination safely, maybe they will meet more marvelous difficulties. No matter what happens, I believe that they will hold the nature in awe.
All right, that' all. Lots of thanks to all the CG friends, thank you for your support and advices. The work is done, but the journey is just beginning, hope everyone good luck!
very biblic in many ways. great execution man. best of luck. :)

Wow! ... This is just FANTASTIC news!!! (Yeah heard it a little late... Was really busy)
I was so fearing that you wouldn't be given the grand prize I personally thought you had had deserved.
This challange is full of winners.... most of them being people I had wanted to see in the list. But for the grand prize I would have not been as happy seeing it any body elses hands.
Congratulations!

Whoohoo!! Congratulations Dehong! Such an absolutely gorgeous inspiring image! Can't wait to read your tutorials. Beautiful work. Cheers!
Edit: Could I ask you a favor? Would you mind describing the various brushes you used? Those for the detailing seem very "dry" and I'm just wondering what settings you may have used in Photoshop to achieve such a traditional, painterly look. Also, are you using a sponge brush to create the speckled background spots behind many of your characters?
It may be asking a lot, but, would you be able to export and share your Photoshop brushes? (If you saved them??)
Congrats again! (Really like your deep purples and browns in works on your website, too. Very different.)
