Title: Charlie Jade mutliverses matte
Name: Benoit Ladouceur
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop, SOFTIMAGE|XSI
Here is an exemple of the matte work I did on Charlie Jade. Since the story is about travelling to parallel universes, it was a frequent thing to produce multiple versions on the same location. In this case, theses 2 variations where made using the live plates shot in South Africa. Since these are locked camera shots they consist mostly ot Photoshop work with 3D as a base for the reactors.

Incredibly real! Now, which is the reference image and which is the matte painting? They both look like photos. Great work!

Hey Ben!
Well done! It's a cool opportunity to do parallel universe images - I really like the crater version since it has more drama.
Nice to see your portfolio on CG too - nice work, I like the Vexcor tower too. Let us know when you've posted your reel!

Looks great, but what's real, and what's fake? I suppose the buildings are fake, and the rest is a photo?

Excellent job..
There is a little defect that could be seen only when you look at the larger version; In second image, left side of the overlay's outside has some contours..
Anyway, perfect matches you achieved in this work...
Congrats
Keep good working

Wow thnx all for the great comments... I'll dig out the original plates when I get home tonight and paste them.
ADP_jack: We where on a very tight deadline on that project... that mostly explains why in a lot of places we had (sadly) to cut corners a little. Once the shot looked good of the HD monitors, we had to move on to the next one.
JackZhang: Wow, a flash from the past... time does really fly. That was a really fun day for me too. I love to give seminar classes like that. When it comes to the personnal network, I would gladly be part of it !! Just send me an invite!!!
WMBrowm / Yoyoyohan: Basically, the bottom 20% of the images are original plate (brownish rocky outcrop in the desert one and the grassy bit with huge white rock in the forrest one), the rest (mid section) is painted, with bit and pieces of painted over live references plates to fill the BG with recognisable South African elements (mountain chain in the back)... I will post the original platestonight for you guys to see.
jason-slab: You live in such a wonderfull country... I was always a bit angry during our work on CJ that we never got to go and see it for ourselves, we had to rely on what the production crew sent us... and the references they sent us where alway breath taking. Just love thoses vistas from table mountain.
carbonmatter: Hey Dan !! Am working on my web site ... it will be online shortly, I'll put my reel on it for you guys.
thenextside: Hi Tim, I'll find a final comp to post tonight at the same time as the original plates...

Like I promised, here is an exemple of the type of raw plates we got from the film crew in Capetown...
Raph: thx man!! yep, next time it's pop3 stuff and rainbow 6...
abhifx: I usually use my digital camera to gather a big part of my reference material, for Charlie Jade though, we had a photographer in South Africa sending us footage and pictures on a regular basis... When it comes to trees and stuff, I live near Mont-Royal (a small mountain in the middle of montreal) so a lot of the green stuff comes from there. The internet is also a good place to gather material (many royalties free images sites and stock footage site out there) but it's a lot more touchy... because of copyrights issue.

Oops, forgot someone... roqsteady: I would love to be able to show the wireframes for the reactor but I don't have them anymore, the 3D scenes for these shots stayed at Cinegroupe when I left. If find the reactor in some other scene files I'll post it right away. :)

thx again for all the great comments!
abhifx: I'm always happy to share what I know... hope it helped.
stavrevstefan: give yourself time... you'll get there :) (it took me a while to get to this point). What did it take to get to that point? As far as I can remember I have always been drawing. At around your age I started carrying around a sketchbook with me at all time, I used it to draw everything around me (from people and objects to scenes and perspective references... including any idea that ran through my head). When it comes to references and tutorials, you can look at theses books: "Perspective for comic book artists" by David Chelsea is usually one I recommend my drawing student, the "dynamic anatomy" by Burn Hogarth is also very good, Anything by Andrew Loomis is also excellent. I also like the d'artiste series from ballistic press (the matte painting book is excellent.. so is the digital painting one). Gnomon workshop also has a series of amazing tutorial dvd wich I find very inspiring. hope this helps !! :)
