View Full Version : basic baking questions
sketchbook 03-22-2006, 11:43 PM i have yet to do much research on this, but i am going to be rendering a fly-through of a pretty highly detailed environment. it's not done with GI, and i am wondering if baking something would save me some time.
so far, frames are rendering at over 3 minutes each, which is pretty slow.
what would you suggest i bake? lights, textures? anything?
thanks

Baking AO could be an option aswell as baking the GI(which you said you dont use).
It depends very much on what is actually going on in your scene, e.g. having lots of play with lights and shadows will leave you with little options in regards of baking this info.

there won't be anything that is moving. all the lights are going to stay stationary, etc.
thanks

When you baking a complex scene you have to consider the baking time which can be very high too. If you use AO then it's probably worth a try. On the other hand 3 min for a frame is quite ok. It all depends on the length of your animation. For example you have a scene with 100 objects and your animation goes 100 frames. You would have to bake 100 objects which probably takes as long or longer than to render the animation. The longer the animation the more you can gain with baking.
