For sure everybody's thinking of a different thing when he reads the words the journey begins. Someone’s imagination shows endless colons of people on their way to somewhere, some others think of packing valises or riding on dragons thousand feet above the ground. But I think about serious problems that'll make of a harmless weekend trip a great adventure. Just imagine what could happen. You're on your family holiday in the Betelgeuse system and your little bro's hits with his toy ball a strange creature. Would it start playing with him together? Or is a ball for it something like the peace dove in the movie Mars Attacks? Whatever happen it'll be a journey worth to be telling about.

I draw this pencil sketch on last weekend. Previously I intend to make some raw creature sketches but soon I've build the entire scene. Yes, there's certainly room for improvements but I think I'm on the right way.

Because I'm such a jumpy guy I already started with colour before having the final lineart. I tried some Gradients in combination with layer masks to get a general idea about the mood of the scene. Often I switch the layer blend modes to get colour combinations I'm not using to much. This one starts to be interesting. It reminds me of a time on the evening when the sun slowly gets to the rest and spreads the last yellowish sunbeams. I call this time for myself the golden hour - the most beautiful moment of the day. But you'll definitely see that I'm not getting to realistic with the rendering. I'd love to achieve some wired and artistic mood in my painting. Let's see what'll happen next.

Maybe you realised that I've rearranged the scene a lot. The aliens pose was hard to call static correct so I rotated him a little. But tweaking on the PC couldn't solve the problem completely because of the wrong leg pose. So I printed the Sketch in a light blue colour and pencilled on top of it a new version. Much better now. In this case it helped me a lot to think of the angles between the legs and the limbs as 3d-shapes in space. On another print I also added the eggs in front of the characters. Now it looks alike the boy has made some strange scrambled eggs. Uuuh, the situation has become loaded. The right stuff for the contest.
The boy stayed the same like in the initial sketch I only tweaked him with the liquify tool. I use this technique a lot for minor sketch adjustments. It's fast and gives good results. Finally I moved him at the right distance to blink in the alien eyes.
Well, now I've got the hardest step before me, the colour blocking.
Wish me luck.

Aah, Adrian, that looks way better. I agree with every approvement you made, especially on those eggs, giving the story a nice twist.
I´m still not 100% convinced about the composition though, but maybe you can fix that by
slapping some colors on.

Did you by any chance thought about giving the viewer a little hint what this misterious journey will look like? That would help i guess.

@SalamanderCoral Thank you so much! You make me very happy ;)

@Art Thank your for your helpful critics. I realy think about it how to tell the viewer more about the journey.

It this step you can clearly see what's my usually technique to make a painting out of a line drawing. I simply blend the lines with painters fabulous palette knife and spread the colour all over the canvas. The background and the foreground should mix well together. This would be the basic work for the next step - the detail rendering.

Hi Hexodus.. original way of looking at the theme, I like it! Like the fact you've kept things like depth of field and haze through the background and then added a great storyline with the characters in the foreground too. If I was going to crit anything at this stage, and to be honest, its more of a suggestion , maybe make the boy more personable, like he's cheekily awaiting the return of his ball, a more upright posture and eager hands, or perhaps more contrite, like he's just realised he's about to be chased by some bloody great alien, and those were his eggs.. not just a pile of rocks... uh oh... that sort of thing.

Be popping in later to see how you're updating though, love the colours of the alien, he's fab!

I began with detail rendering of the monster and the eggs. I'm not satisfied with it but it's just only the beginning. I may receive better results next days.

@Chief+Daniel Thank you so much!

@Zapyhri You may be right about the boys pose. In original I thought to make out of him a very naive person. To decline how dangerous the situation really is I'm using his family in the background. I this stage they aren't clearly defined but in the final painting I hope they'll work better.
