Today I got the most severe problem I ever had with Maya. Snap to Magnets option stopped working and has no effect at all. I went through all of the troubleshooting procedures listed below but nothing fixed it.
Resetting the tool. This put all settings as follows:
Subdivisions: 1
Smoothing Angle: 0
Snapped to Edge: checked
Snapped to Magnets: checked
Number of Magnets: 1
Magnet Tolerance: 10
Please, somebody confirm that these are the default settings when the tool is reset.
Please, also uncheck Snap to Edge and tell me if this affects in anyway the Snap to Magnets option. As far as I remember it should get dimmed.
Starting a new scene
Quitting Maya, deleting the whole Maya 7 folder from My Documents folder, and restarting with use the default preference option.
Restarting Windows XP and opening Maya with the default settings
Uninstalling Maya 7 and installing 7.0.1 update, which was already installed, and opening Maya with the default settings.
I have a copy of 6.5 installed on the same computer that was not used for months and I opened it to check if the Magnet option will work there. Amazingly it didn’t work in 6.5 too, even after I restarted 6.5 with the default settings.
This is the most severe case I’ve ever experienced. I have never reinstalled Maya before for troubleshooting reasons. Just deleting the userPrefs.mel file from the Prefs folder had always fixed similar problems but this time apparently the problem resides somewhere outside Maya. I can’t remember installing anything new recently except the automatic XP security patches that come on regular bases. Apparently something from the system or other programs and processes interferes with this tool and the next logical step is system reinstall but I’m not going to make such sacrifice for the Magnet functionality. In a couple of months I’m going to move Maya in a brand new computer anyway. Meanwhile I’ll go through the pain of adjusting the snap points through history, unless somebody helps me get out of this mess.
Will appreciate any ideas.
