Nice to know you all !

This evening I would like to share this WIP : "Venere Nera" (Black Venus).
I'm not an illustrator / graphic / designer, I'm a simple Artificial Intelligence student with a great passion and I post here to receive hints about colors / lights / composition.

Yes... composition... please help me! I'm less than a beginner, I've read tons of webdocuments in 3 days and this is my first experience with a 'hope-well-composed' pic.

Venere Nera is... a black woman near the sea.. red orange and yellow of the sunset...a sea like liquid gold....

Suggestions? :p

The golden sea is realy cool, Almost like beer lol:beer:. I wait for you next update. Oh and one question what is she sitting on?

Maybe the sea could use more warmer darker tones like reddish deep shadows, pretty saturated though I'd say.Maybe even going towards purple in the deepest shadows. :)

I like the idea, very nice.

@werd : she is sitting on a stone that in my mind is like an agate. I'm working on it now, I'm changing its perspective to obtain a correct view (now it does NOT describe something solid :scream:)

@jmboe :I'll surely add reds and purples but I prefer to correct colors with all elements well defined. I loose myself with color corrections

Thank you for posting !

Hmm, there's something that just isn't sitting well with me about the compostion. I think it might be because right now it looks like she's sitting on the water. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait to comment. It's hard to say anything about composition without having all the elements of the painting present.

Also, I would be cautious about adding too much into the background of the picture. You want every element in the scene to compliment your subject (Black Venus in this case), not to fight for the viewer's attention (I hope that makes sense).

If you haven't seen this article already, Philip Staub gives an excellent quick and dirty tutorial on basic composition.

On another note, you call yourself a "less than beginner". You have some really great things happening with this image. I like your strong use of diagonals which give the picture energy and movement. Her wind-swept hair and frothy ocean only add to this feeling. There's nothing about it that is very beginner-esque. In my eyes this seems to be the makings of a very nice piece. I can't wait to see more!

Ok, I haven't had free hours in this week to work on my pic, don't loose your hope, I'll finish it one day :wise:

Well, I've worked on composition (thanks to Staub's tutorial) :
- flipped image to see wrong placed elements
- changed reef to strange rocks. I don't know if there's something similar in nature but...they works like diagonals and that's enough :p
- added a foreground rock placed on opposite diagonal to create something like a 'frame' for Black Venus
- changed sea / rocks perspective to add 'air'. The sea is quite far from BlackVenus, only a bottom-coming wave can reach the girl.
- distortion on sky to add depht. Does it work?
- added sun rays 'idea' to play with lights and elements like rocks and atmosphere. Still setting up.

So..has it improved itself over the past weeks?

Ciao Serena,
your works are very nice, I've seen some beautiful human bodies' drawings on your site.
I like a lot the movement of the sky, maybe it's a little too much round, very good the rocks in diagonal... maybe there could be in nature too. I wonder if you had remove the nice big wave that was in your first sketch, or if it's only hide to show better the sea on the background... "mi raccomando" don't remove it! That big wave has some good shapes and movement sensation I like a lot. The rays of the sun seems to me not to match with the light of the sky... or vice versa ;-) I should add more light on the right from the direction of the rays.
Can't wait to see more updates!
Good work,:arteest:
complimenti!!

Ciao Andrea !
I've seen your portfolio, great works guy !
I've re-aligned the sky and I've created a light difference left-right in it as you have written (thank you!!)
Well... the wave... I've shifted it to the foreground, but I've to be honest, I've cutted it under the venus' rock to show the horizon line of the sea.

I've also added few rocks on the right to balance the pic (thanks to Kirsi) : I want to have practice in composition so I'll make and destroy this pic until I'll be satisfied

So... that's the file...
how about perspective? Is it right?

Kisses, Serena.

I love the atmosphere your giving this shore! The spikes are awesome. I'm not sure whether the moon could be fully lit if the sun is coming from behind though :). A semi circle would look more real I think.
And another thing is that her hands are both at the same level, makes it somewhat fabricated in appearance. You could let her right arm (on screen left) hang loose against her body perhaps. That could still give a nice mood.

I find the background intensely spiritual or mystical. Absolutely love it, Just a question of working on it more no? :)

Thank you for the reply !!! http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/tupitupi.gif

Moon : you are absolutely right ! As a matter of facts I've painted it 'full' to better render it as a semicircle. As you know, we are able to see the darker side of the moon also when it is in 'semicircle' . I'll simple add a dark over-layer. I also have to adjust clouds all around and on the moon...so... be patient please, I'll show it in the right way, exception made for semicircle direction that will be from right to left and not viceversa to help the composition. http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/stordita.gif

Venere's hands : absolutely right also on that point http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif . But... yes...there's a but. Venere won't be a 'common' human. She will born from stone so her feet and her hands will be merged to the stone while her breast and her face will be purely human and "alive".. I'm waiting to finish the background cause I won't make and remake and remake again her, so be patient also on this point.

Background : I've to adjust background cliff to obtain an unique style on the entire pic. Nothing so hard, I can do it quickly (i hope http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/fagiano.gif).

Thanks for the 'tips', hope to read you soon ! http://forum.html.it/forum/images/smilies/030.gif

More shading on Venere? If you're having weird things pop up when you try, you could try to increase the resolution perhaps. I like it!

Looks good, I like the purple hues on the figure to seperate her from the background, great work.
