View Full Version : Practice walk cycle
gabe28 12-20-2002, 05:40 PM Now that I've mastered modeling (hehe... yeah right) I'm trying to wrap my mind around rigging and character animation. Here's a walk cycle I've been working on for the last few days. My main source of help had been the book 'The Animators Survival Kit'. Here's the link. Please check it out and let me know how it can be improved.

And for those that want to know, it's done in Lightwave.
Thanks
PS - you'll need the latest Divx video codec to view it.

It's looks better than most first walk cycles. Good job.
What I see that could be improved are:
The feet snap a little to quickly when settling to the ground. The feet should roll just a little more. Not much though.
The right lower leg doesn't come as far forword as the right leg, which gives the impression of him favoring that leg.
Bring the knees higher on their forward swing and give some positive tension at that point so they hover a moment while the lower leg swings forward. That should make his steps a little more perky; right now his legs are sluggish compared to rest of his walk.
Other then that, he looks great. I can't wait to see more.

mmmmhhhh..... smooth, but I would add:
- legs must be straight in the contact frame
- legs widest position shouldn't coincide with arms widest position.
- there's no overlap on the hands / arms.
- you didn't animate the spine, add some overlap / wave effect.
Also needs more weight, try increasing the up and down movement of the hips.
keep animating...

nice work so far, I hope to experiment more with animation
this may be a little off topic, but can anyone recommend a site that goes into animating walkcycles, not application specific just detailing how a "person" should walk :bounce:
Try this.....Animals in Motion (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0486249115/002-0589929-7500801?vi=glance) hope that helps....

hehe, he is walking like i did when i was a kid, draging my legs on the floor. ;)
frinsklen: i don't think that the legs HAVE TO be staright in contact frame. actually i think that in real life most people don't do it, their legs usually bent a bit.
btw i love the character

watch yourself walking; unless you're really really tired that you're sliding your feet, your legs will be straight. True that not always, but it one of those "rules" for every walkcycle. Besides, it helps you feel the weight.
anyway, let's see what gabe28 says, maybe he has a completely different idea, who knows!

hehe... no, you're right I should have straightened the legs there. Never occurred to me. That's why I need this feedback, I'm still trying to figure out just how the hell the legs work. I think I'm slowly getting it.
This isn't my first walk cycle, by the way. Sorry if I made it sound like it was. It's just the first time I'm really, really trying to get it figured out. I've always focused 90% of my 3D efforts towards learning to model.
So, thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I'm going to do start over with a new walk cycle and try to incorporate all the advice I've gotten here. I'll post the results.

OK, here's the newest version of my walk cycle. I started over from scratch again. Hopefully, I was able to incorporate the changes people recommended. It's still not as fluid or smooth as I'd like but that seems to be a real tough thing to figure out.

Please, have a look and give me your honest critique (I can take it).
Thanks.

Another quick update to the cycle. I noticed the feet were lifting off a little on the points where the full weight of the body should be applied on one of the feet. Plus the head was doing a weird twitchy thing as it looked around. I fixed both problems and rerendered.
