View Full Version : Reelsmart Motion Blur?
kromekat 03-22-2006, 09:36 AM Hi folks,
After checking over a test animation I set off rendering last night, with scene motion blur applied, I am looking at other options, as it's going to take too long this way.
Reelsmart Mo-Blur plugin for After Effects looks like a possible solution, and I was wondering what other C4D users who have bought it think of the results and speed!?
Would the standard or pro version be advisable? - does anybody find they need to add their own vectors, or use the separate matte control in pro?
Does that Vixol plugin from Core Arsenal still exist, and if so, will it work with 9.5? - do I need it anyway?
Thanks for any insights :)

its great. We use it non stop.
buy basic version. I personally dont see that much aditional value in pro.
Its not fast (for a compositing filter), buts is lightspeed fast compared to real motion blur. Of course, you cant expect same quality, specially with overlapping objects
vixol works with 9.5, dont know if its still avaliable. But it usefull combined with multipass object buffer rendering
One example of ReelSmart usage - ours (http://www.3fs.si/static/mov/RR_spica.mov)
It was rendered with Vixol, but then we realized we were getting worse results with it, so we just ad normal ReelSmart basic on it with animating the strenght.

Reel Smart Motion Blur Pro is indispensable in my opinion. I use it all the time and it adds that little extra to animated elements. You will not be disappointed. It's not real motion blur and at eccessive levels it does start to do weird things, but subtle levels can really add to your compositions. I gave up on motion blur in c4d years ago when I found this plugin. I usually use it combined with directional blur in AE and tailor it to how the scene pans out. I also use it to blend green screen footage of actors with backgrounds. This works very well. It can also be used in conjunction with Fieldskit de-interlacer to give video a more filmic look. Fieldskit is also available from Reel Smart.
Now to Vixol. I have it and it works in 9.5 but I don't use it. For the time it takes to output the seperate pass that gives you your vector colour pass, you can do other stuff. If I had to do something that needed to be more accurate then I would use it. Most of my stuff is mo graphics so I need a fast turnaraound, and this plugin really adds value to renders with very little overhead in terms of rendering.
Download the demo and check it out. It's awesome

I have tried Vixol with some success. Does it support float output though? In theory this will make handling motion vectors in AE or Shake easier (AE and RSMB now being float-capable, in Shake it already was). Bring on good motion blur within C4D though. In fact, a native Vixol replacement too.
I notice that RevisionFX are saying that the pixel tracking is much improved in the latest update.

Thanks guys - sounds like it's worth a try then - downloading the demo now!
I need it for some some scenes where an object is flying past buildings in the BG, and the camera is tracking the flying object - the BG buildings will be getting a lot of blur, and I was concerned that since the foreground object will be getting some motion blur as well, that it would all get mixed up, but in hindsight, I'll just render them as separate passes anyway, and apply blur to taste in post! :)

Just tried it on my scene in AE7, and it's definitely fast! - it seems a little confused though and is throwing the blur in a few directions, so maybe this is where I do actually need the pro version to provide a tracking layer to calculate direction a bit better. Or, I do need to render everything out as separate passes - I have traffic, BG buildings, and the foreground object along with the camera pan and track - so it's bound to be a bit disoriented! ;)

Woot! - yay!
Just tried it with 3 passes - one for foreground object, one for traffic, and one for BG - works brilliantly - not perfect, but plenty good enough, and even at 3 times the initial rendering time, it's way faster than SMB, and in terms of blur quality, looks nicer!
Just bought the standard edition! ;)

AE 7 has CCForceMotionBlur effect which also works if you didn't want to incurr xtra costs.

RSMB Pro has saved me on several projects. It's not a perfect solution but does work well in most cases. It's worth the price when your back is against the wall and you can't wait for C4D to render it out in 3D.
Like your finding, using some object tags in your render will really help control the blur levels.
