Hey there,

I have a Maya scene of a kitchen that someone has given me. I know I can export the scene into Max, but can I then texture it all there then export it back into Maya, complete with all the texture maps complete.

I've been searching the forums for 15 mins, and can't find anything on this particular aspect of Maya><Max'ing.

You can export the kitchen scene from Maya into the OBJ format, and import it in Max, as you said. Then UVW map and texture the scene, collapse all the modifier stack into an editable mesh and then export the scene into an OBJ file as well. On the OBJ export settings be sure to check the Texture coordinates, Normals and Smooth Groups. And also dont forget to set the faces to Quads, so Max doesn't retesselate your model into triangles.

But by doing this, what you are exporting from Max is the scene geometry along with the UV coordinates only! (There will be no materials exported from Max that can be read into Maya). So when you come to Maya, you have to recreate the actual materials and use the same image textures that you used within Max.
So it is not helpfull if you were thinking of using the special material attributes and procedural textures that Max offers and transfering them somehow automatically into Maya (in this case maybe "baking" those materials would help)

I would recommend exporting an FBX file format out of Max. There is a FBX plugin for max and it works great. OBJ is an old file format, pretty quirky and sometimes has a tendency to mess up pretty much everything in the file. Try FBX and you'll see the difference. It's much more civilzed :)
