View Full Version : Space Hulk - Short WIP
.overflowed 12-19-2002, 10:08 PM My friend and I are planing to do some short film. It will be based on Warhammer 40 000 universe and to be more precise on Space Hulks. Space Hulks are huge, empty, cold wrecks of once powerfull spaceships which now drifts throug space. Some times there are genstealers colonies on them. Genstealers are powerful aliens best han-to-hand fighters in galxay. And sometimes terminators (best human trops - elite of elite)come to cleanup such space hulk. And there it begins...
I post some enviroment test renders and my friend soon will post terminators.
Waiting for C&C.
ps Sorry for my english :)
Small with ps touch-ups.

They're well detailed, bit I think the legs are too short.
If I look at my GW miniatures, I can see the legs are more than the half of the total figure. Moreover, I think little legs (like cartoon proportions) really don't fit the 40K univers, give it some great legs, a spacze marine is about 2.30 high !

did you use the original tabletop plastic figure as references ?? cause it would explain the thing with the short leg .. ???
but we have to think that not everyone is a w40k purist ..
and that 98 % of the viever would not notice it :-)

BTW, you seen EpShot's SpaceWolf (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=124734#post124734)... although he never textured his. But when I saw that second last render of yours, for a second I thought it was a macro photo of the actual Citadel model... So, no crit's

I can remember playing the PC version of SpaceHulk and it was sooo scary...I dont think many people would like playing it cause the adrenaline rush was ultra intense and the sounds were definately enough to chill the blood...hearing your squad getting killed one at a time by the genestealers.
These models look fantastic.....excellent job!!

i have never seen any pics of the space hulks, but the atmosphere is damn great in your renders, and with the terminator looking so close to the ref's i've seen, i expect the spacehulk to be dead on too ;)
all thou, i kinda find Games Workshop's humans/terminators kinda cartooney, i think you have gotten away with it, making it looking less cartooney and more realistic :)

Anders G: The latest figures aren't as cartoony as they were before, so i think the "OLD" figures were cartoony beacouse that they were in most cases made of plastic, and it was then difficult then to create good figures (materials weren't as good as now). The terminators and genestealers are old designs and yes, they are a bit cartoony, but when i see i.e. new figures of dark elves i think they aren't cartoony at all.... just a loose thoughts :)
Btw i like the work so far :buttrock:

the environments look great....but i think the proportions of the terminators are still WAY off. take a look at this pic:
http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/image.asp?size=a&img=212824
anyhow, warhammer fantasy and warhammer 40,000 arent meant at all to be cartoony. they are both meant to be very dark and gothic.

i checked out the illustrations, and while the illustration's representation of the warhammer world looks more artistic, i think its up to the artist on how they want to go about it....maybe the look of the figurines is how THEY want to go about it...just goes to show you that artistic license it well...artistic license...

Hem... Um, I don't want to be rude or something, but as Array said, and as I already said, the proportions are off.
In fact, I think there's two way to represent the GW figures, whether you do it very realistic, adapting the proportions on the human ones, like the illustrations, which is hard, moreover for an movie (and moreover with terminator, which totally don't respect the human body proportions, look at the shoulders of a terminator, they are way too high and wide, or look at the chest size, way too small) whether you do it like the plastic and metal figures, but even doing this way, you have to respect the proportions perfectly. GW proportions are not realistic, but it does it, and that since 25 years.
Doing the legs bigger and wider would make your terminator look a lot better.

Hmm, it might not be a good idea to use Warhammer 40,000 models as a reference. I may be wrong (hey, it's been many years) but I thought Space Hulk Terminators looked different than W40K Terminators.
These days, Citadel minatures are made by building a large scale version about 6 inches tall (like a Forge World figure (http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~joshua.y/forumpic/smarine.jpg)) so they can work more detail into them. Then they make the mold out of a scaled down version to normal size (which for those unaware is about 1 inch tall.)
Obviously this technology wasn't available in the days of Space Hulk, so older models generally have larger, and more sparse details; I definately recall the Imperial eagle on the breastplate being alot larger on Space Hulk Terminators as opposed to there W40K counterparts.
Array
12-22-2002, 10:36 PM
actually the wh40k terminators, and the deathwing in specific, havent changed much at all in the last 10 years. as we speak, gamesworkshop is remaking ALL of the terminator models for warhammer40k and fitting them on 40mm bases (as opposed to 25 mm now) hopefully we'll get some more dramatic poses, as opposed to the 'hug me, my legs are astride" models we have now.
Commander Falk
12-22-2002, 10:46 PM
Mmh... It looks like we're going a bit out of topic... Sorry !
But... What what what what what ? What did you just say Array ?
GW is remaking the terminators ?! WHere did you get that infos ? Have you a link ? I have a white dwarf where they just say "if we ever remake the terminators, then blablah", but I've never seen an official info about that ! (Mmh, there's a newss on portent.net... So yup', maybe will see new terminators !)
And hum, Oracle, are you sure of what you say ? Big models, like land raider or rhinos are made at a bigger scale, then scale down, but I've never seen it for small individual figures. They sculpt it in green stuff, at 1:1 scale.
Maybe the plastic figures ? But I would be very surprise of that.
I think GW sculptors are simply very talented.
Array
12-22-2002, 11:47 PM
i also think that they are sculpted at a 1:1 scale...maybe you are thinking of the terrain?
as far as the terminators go, i read this on www.portent.net , apparently the new Grey Knight terminators coming out this summer will be the first to have the new bases (well abbadon is in terminator armor and is on a 40mm base, but he doesnt count since he's a character  )

Ahh, well... I'll look into it. Like I said, it's been many years since I set foot in a GW, but I'm pretty sure it was a GW employee who told me this a few years ago at Games Day.

First of all Fantastic work, I too played the PC game a long time ago and it is the most marvelously creepy game I have played.
The corridor is very well done, I love the style and the attention to detail, I assume it will be more atmospherically lit in animation to make it as creepy as the game was.
I love the terminatior although I can see why a purist might want it to be absoloutly true to the models, I like the short squat style, I think bulk and squatness gives an impression of power.
My first impression of the developing Genestealer was , wip 1: hmm not bad, wip 2: Thats better, wip 3: looking good and wip 4: Excellent! The geometry in the character is looking really good and I think it will make a striking adversary.
The spacehulks are also very impressive the design is great and the detail in there is certainly of movie like quality. I assume you will roughen them up though? The look like they have just come out of the ship yards.
Please keep the WIPs comming, this thread has a potential to be a WIP classic as long as there is enough input from the artists. I hope the animation will be as good as your modelling.
Just one piece of advice, please take great care over the music/soundtrack. Music and sound are just as important as video content and if the audio in your 3 minute trailer is as good as the video this could be a real classic!
Well done.

Ditto. I think it's that the scene looks 'posed' if you know what I mean. Like it's a pic of the figurines that have been dropped into a scene rather than a snapshot of some action.
Maybe some motion blur on certain characters?

Augustus: In Warhammer Universum - ships drifts through "warp" wich is a kind of mental dimmention, full of psi energy or something like that. there are storms etc so its not vacuum i think. There is also "an eye of terror" wich has something to do with chaos gods :). Small white dots are possibly renderer errors. We are trying to fix it.

The only thing I would comment about the Hybrid is the odd looking claws from his right foot, the rest of his body is intrestingly distorted and looks very natural but the claws don't seam too.

Hybrid looks very nice (maybe wrong word, he ain't nice when you meet him), it's good to see non-symetrical models;). Some suggestions: specularity on his skin is too uniform, as are the colors. Some red on these lesions, some veins just under the skin, maybee some greenish blemishes, that kind of stuff may help. And he needs a painfull face expression....

You guys kick ass! That Carnifex is looking so damn awsome, same with the hybrid. I was actually wanting to do something with the 40k universe later on (i'll be doing blood angels though :) )
I really think you should try to make the terminators more based on the newer models that GW has out, those old ones are too cartoony for the hybrid and Carnifex now. Genestealers could use a little longer claws as well, IMO. Corridors look sweet, but less lighting.
I just CAN'T wait for your animation. hurry hurry hurry!

this thread is pretty old and i didn't find! So that is why commenting so late! First of all! Pretty nice work! Like the SpaceHulk. Love that terminator model! Stop that discussion these legs are perfect for that ancient powerarmors! They don't have to be like a perfect human, cause space marines and also terminators are not of human proportions as well! Maybe if anybody is interessted read the books of Ian Watson. The first one describes in good ways what a space marine is! Not of human proportions! Check these books fine stuff to read in your freetime(rendertime). For the Hybrid life form! Hmm i would impossible for him to survive in a hulk. He is a human hybrid with just some deformed arms and legs etc. He is mostly human! Hulk->no air-> no hybrids. Hybrids mostly come to live if genstealers are attacking a planet.
So far good work! Like to see the animation!

well i do not know if i can tell you this corz scenar is top secret :)
our Spacehulk is used by genestealers cultist's to move whole cult to one of imperial planets. Thats why we have hybrids there.
I do not know what id dooing carnifex - you should ask one of the cultists ;) One thing is sure - if the hulk reaches the planet - it will be lost :)
We are using old design corz carnifex is going to be used in one of the hand to hand combat scene (or mayby hand to scythe :))
anyway the new one has a dedly ranged weapon, so it would be unnesesarry to come close as we want. And the old one looks just more powerfull :)
I'm very happy that you like carnifex. modeling as usuall - polymesh/deformpaint. Textures are painted by hand (using wacom graphire) in deeppaint and procesed in photoshop.

Scenariusz jest tyle ze mozna go strescic w dwoch zdaniach i to przy rozgadaniu sie wiec nie bedziemy go zdradzac do konca.
Modeli z rozmyslem robimy wuchte.
Pomalu przemizamy sie do animowania a ja zglebiam coraz bardziej combustion.

Very nice models/textures/renderings. This will probably turn out amazing! Thumbs up. The dof on the last image makes the whole scene look like it's miniature scale though. The background blur wouldn't kick in that heavily on a shot of that scale.
Here's an image I made some while ago to demonstrate the freaky power of dof! :surprised

quick question though (forgive me if this has already been addressed earlier in the thread, it's been a while since I read many of these posts)
Are you deliberately going for a miniature look? To me all the models (except maybe the gothic) are looking like the actual games workshop minis rather than the life-size items they represent.

no, it was not intended. we are trying to stay close to references, but we allow some differences - anyway models are quite sensitive for enviroments - there are glossys etc, so final feel depend of enviroment. Wow
Amazing stuff. I can’t believe I have not seen any of this work earlier.
I have been a fan of Warhammer 40K and always thought it would make a great 3D movie. Glad to see I was right.
Keep up the amazing work.

Thx for all comments.
Today we finally managed to finish trailer. Now we are trying to upload it somewhere. We will start for it new thread in gallery/finished but we will also give a link here. Stay tuned :)
Sight of finished trailer and your comments here gave us more to work on whole movie. It's a very long way but we are full of energy now.

it should be on lycos ftp in ca 2 hours - upload is very slow today - 5 kb/s. Although we are not quite happy about the trailer, it gaved us a lot of knowledge that we are going to use in full short. we had to develop mehods of rendering quite huge scenes as for standard PC - there are plenty of bitmaps, and a lot of polygons, so we had to make some compromises on quality/rendering speed. Animation is also a bit :(, but we are in constant learning process :)

We are very sorry but we have VERY big problems with lycos. It's blocking avi and zip files. So we decided to make TRICK and add extension .jpg to treaser and codec so you can download it. After it you should delete that extension.
We know how silly it is but that is only choice for us now until we will find something better.
Ofcourse if somebody knows how to deal will lycos or any other good free hosting site write us :)

ok.. i just downloaded the trailler .. and saw it..
have to tell you that i am a bit disapointed ....
the level of coolness from all the wip stuff you did was simply amazing and i expected to find it in your trailler...
but the termainator soldier ..are really not so good animated ..
the lightning is no more so cool as it was...and many other small stuff
i expected a bit more action... or at least to see more of the fabulouse model you did with your team..
my last wip :

Sorry... but the website you are looking for is no longer available on Tripod (or you may have mistyped the URL).
You will be automatically redirected to Lycos Tripod Homepage in 5 seconds.
That's what I get now...
I guess you guys have crossed the bandwidth limit?

The download woked great for the movie.
But I still cannot watch it. That x-vid codec is nothing but binaries I have no idea how to compile, and nowhere are there any instructions on what to do with them. Therefore, I cannot watch it, nor can many others, I believe.

YAY!
The day has come to view this great piece in 40k history :)
Unfortunatly I have to go to a thanksgiving supper today, and I'm on a 56k. So tomorrow I'll be able to see it! (I'm downloading FlashGet right now) The modeling you guys have done is great, and I'm glad you guys havn't given up, I can't wait to see the trailer, and I'm even more anxious for the whole short!

Guys, that was awesome! I love it, I've watched it quite a few times so far :) Your tyranid movement looks flawless. A few crits though, the sun (or really bright star) at the beginning moves way too fast. If you had it just peaking above the planet, I think it would look alot better. Your smoke and fire effects are great (how did you do that?) As for the terminator movement, I can see why they would move like that, seeing as how the armor has servo's and gears that are suppost to increase the space marines strength, but I always thought the movement would be more fluid. If you guys have a video camera, just tape yourselves walking with the same angle you want to use in the movie, and use it as a basis for the marines movement. The music is really cool too, did you create it, or get it from somewhere? The Coming soon banner was a really cool touch as well, I love how it rips away. I hope there is more action in the full short, and I'm not upset at the lack of action in the teaser, because it IS a teaser, and if you've watched alien, aliens or any of those movies, you know there isn't much action in the begining, but when it starts it starts :) So we'll all be looking for it in the full short ;) Just don't make us wait too long ok?
For those of you who can't find a way to install the Xvid codec, just go here for a stable Xvid Codec (http://umaniac.leffe.dnsalias.com/stable/stable.html) Xvid is a weird codec, probably really good seeing as how it's mpeg4. Hope you all can view this.

Alright, I'll start from the beginning, and work my way through it.
Firstly, I think the beginning text is too long... it really sort of screws up the pace for the other shots. When the ship starts to break through out of the warp, i love the ripple ideas, but it starts getting distorted and then it cuts to the ship emmerging... i find this really distracting. anoth probelm i see with this shot is your eye is looking at the sun/star, when the ship finally emerges, perhaps you could slow the sun down, and start it closer to the planet, so its behind the planet as the distortion starts. also, the camera chaking as the ship passes is a little to much, you might try toning it down. just an idea.
your enviroment looks great, but the sfx dont match up.
terminators walking.... far to jerky. it looks as if frames were cut out completely. the turn cycle of the flamer looked great as well.
the carnefix was by far the best excecuted part of the short. it was scary as hell, and while the sfx were slightly off, it still looked scary as hell!
overall, i think you have some stuff that needs improving. your modelling is par none, and it looks great. i think corners may have been cut in the animation sequence, which, unfortunatly, takes alot of enjoyment out of the peice for me personally.
overall, i still love it. its got loads of great things going for it, it just needs to be tweeked a bit and sweetened. remember, its the little things that make movies.

I have to chime in with the others complaining about the codec. It would be cool if people would encode thier files in a codec a little more widely used which doesn't require an MIT degree to figure out how to install...
I've spent hours downloading two files now, only to find that I am still unable to see the trailer. Rather dissapointing.
