View Full Version : Blend material won't show off !
Pickman 12-19-2002, 07:34 PM Hi there, whether I'm in open GL or Direct 3D my viewport won't show certain types of texture (Blend for example ???) in MAX5
Bitmap works fine but not gradient ramp or bump why is that ??
Thx a lot, I'm a bit puzzled...

Blend materials won't show in the viewports. It's always been that way. There are quite few materials that won't show...I know it sucks, but hey...it's not really all that bad.

Cheers 3DZealot, never notice it till today, good to know it's not a bug from my driver
Thx for your answer. Maybe you could answer my other question, I'm trying to map an orc with different IDs, using procedural textures, ID1 is skull flesh and I would like to make another procedural for teeth and gum (ID2), using a smooth transition from ID1 to 2 (flesh to gum) how can I achieve that ?? ID2 is a blend material with a mask, using a gradient ramp.

I'm glad I could be of some help.
First, let's clarify. Are you selecting polygons and applying a material directly to them by ID?
If so, you may have a problem.
If not, the answer is forthcoming.

I am, but I've tried select polys or multisubobjects method but none of them work:thumbsdow
Any idea ???

Hey, just noticed you're French. Cool!
I wish I spoke french...(sigh).
Anyway, I think your method should work, in theory. You can't get a good smooth transition between 2 material IDs. Perhaps if you made the teeth and gums the same ID and used a gradient map in the mix channel of your blend material. Or perhaps you already did. But I think gradients need UV maps. Maybe that's your problem...Hmmmm...
Tell me more about the problem. Why won't what you are doing work?
You could unwrap the mesh and use a black and white bitmap as a mask...That would be the best way. But then, that would also take a good bit of time.
Like I said, tell me more, I'm sure we can get it to work.

Sorry I went to bed in the meanwhile:rolleyes: , I've tried the gradient (with same ID for gum+teeth) but it does work with UVW modif, that's why I previously tried:select polys>modif UVW, but this doesn't seem to work, why ? Dunno.
Don't worry for your French I'll invite over

It's 3am here..I should be in bed
Let's break this down.
We know that 2 material IDs can't transition smoothly. There will be a delineation between the 2 no matter what.
Therefore, you will have to unwrap that area of the mesh...
But then, we are getting away from the whole procedural idea...
Hmmm...we have a dilema.
Can you post a few pics of the areas you are trying to texture?
Maybe then I can both fully understand the problem, as well as start formulating solutions...
PS
If I'm ever in normandy, maybe I'll have to make you put up with an American for a bit. :D
