View Full Version : material tuts?
(B-HOLM) 12-18-2002, 09:23 PM hey, I'd really like to learn how the whole connecting thing work when working with materials to make a shader...I've read some things in the help files, but it doesn't really help me...I also tried looking at some of the shaders from the shader library, but I understand nothing of it

I hear you. Texturing and shading networks in Maya can be a bit confusing. I'm still learning the hang of it. My suggestion is that if you can afford it, purchase the new texturing DVDs for Gnomon. I'm planning on purchasing them soon...

I suggest ordering the advanced shading networks cd rom from alias wavefront. Heavy hitting information, by far the best shading network resource I have found yet.

I've seen AW's Advance Shading Networks DVD. There's a good reason why is called "advance." I don't recommend it if you are just starting out. Ofcourse, there are always expections...

Cheapest way to learn shaders in maya is to dl a bunch from Highend3d, then import them into maya and check them out in
hypershade. Reverse engineer them. If you mouse over the Connection lines, a popup will tell you the inputs and outputs.
You can rightclick on the nodes and choose the help file for that particular node.
Then, try recreating the shader along side your sample in the workspace. Take it slow and start with simple shaders. You'll screw up a bit at first in trying to recreate them, but the trial and error process will teach you loads of variations and give you ideas for your own shaders. At a certain point things will click and you'll realize that this is no big deal. You'll discover utility nodes and other such fun things and soon realize that the possiblities are endless. Soon it will be on to the MR DGS Material and other MR specific tools. It's a wonderful world, I'm gonna cry.
Then buy the DVDs to fill in the gaps.
