View Full Version : OBAN/like toolset in maya?
keops 03-19-2006, 06:53 AM I'm looking fo some flexible tool which allows to align objects on a surface and to manipulate them afterwards like OBAN in cinema4d:

i've already used two techniques :
the particle instancing and the paint script tool, but it's nowhere as flexible as OBAN seems to be.
i know there's some duplication along surfaces scripts on Highend3d but as i remember them, they don't work with a lot of object.
any inputs will be greatly appreciated.
ps:( as i'm here if any of you knows how to translate particle instanced object onto real copies he/she will be my heroe :D )

but you may want to try paintFX for this. it has various options to distrubute strokes on a surface and for controlling the direction things come out. almost all those examles on the oban page you posted could be acheived in paintFX. of course its not going to allow you to get as close up as real geometry necessarily but for grassy fields etc its cool. you can also define your own geometry as brushes, there is a thread on doing that here to make garbage for a city scene, someplace..

did you check geometry paint, which is included in the bonus Tools? i think it does what you want since many years
is it true? i can define my own geometry as mesh brushes?

thanks for your awnsers.
yenvalmar:
i'm exploring the paintFX option right now,
could you post a link to the thread talking about defining your own geometry as pFX brushes?
antweiler:
i'll try that, thank you :)
and if any of you wan't to know, i found a script allowing to work like maya's instancer, make particles replacement, but use object's copies instead of instances allowing to make multi generation random particle placement on objects.
