Title: Farewell
Name: Tim Warnock
Country: Canada
Software: Photoshop

This was just done for fun between projects. I started it a while ago and it sat unfinished for a few months. I dragged it out again recently to finish it off. It was all done in Photoshop. I tried to really push the perspective to give it a very expansive feel.

Hey Tim !

Nice work... good sense of depth and perspective.
I just love the dramatic feel given by the extreme camera angle.

The flames coming out of the flying ship are a bit too red for my taste, they keep pulling my eye away from the scenery towards them. Maybe adding a bit more red to the surrounding structures using the flame as light source would help balance it, or pushing their palette towards more golden colors would do the thing.

Again, just love that composition, reminds me of some stuff by McQuarrie or Johnston.

hey thanks guys I apretiate all your kind words.

Ben, good to see you on here. Thanks for your feadback. You make some very good points. I agree. Adding some red lighting would help. Say hi to Sean and tell him to get his but in gear and start posting his work here!

Niva, thanks. When you click on the image you should get a 1600px wide image. Do you want bigger then that?

Cheers,
Tim

Kick ass stuff! I really like this loose yet defined way of portraying environments.

one crit: the character on the right is a bit hard to 'read' because of the small head.

5 stars nevertheless!

Awesome image. I really like how you've used both strong vertical and horizontal lines to create that real sense of depth. The lighting and texturing in incredible, and I really like the "graphitti" detail on the side of the ship. I'd love to see a few more ships zipping around in the background, just to fill out the city with some life. Small critique though... amazing work!

I'm with Raphael with hooking up a WIP! I know it can be a pain since the main focus is the piece and not the process. Great job of balacning details and the sketchy painterly feel (above the dock for example). The detail for the cityscape breathtaking, escpeicially near the left of the upper vanishing point. The wind's blowing to the right I see -awesome man .

I hope I get a remote started for my ship...

The lighting on the underside of the left building kicksass as well.

Great work,
Matt

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the feedback. I have made a few changes based on a lot of your excellent suggestions. Also here is the WIP that a few of you requested.

Basically there isn't anything special about my process. I began by working up a sketch with 3 point perspective.

Then I began to overlay textures and add atmosphere and lighting.

I also changed my mind part way through about the ship design. There was actually a third design previous to these but I didn't bother posting it.

Enjoy.

Thank you all!!

AnalyzeThis,
This painting started from random blobs. I started it when I had some down time at work one day. You can see in the first frame of my breakdown that it is very loose and fast. It's all about mood and composition at this point. I'm conscious of my perspective form the very beginning. From there I work on creating depth and figuring where those blobs sit in space by pushing some back and bringing some forward with contrast and saturation.
As far as inspiration goes Blade Runner is always close to my heart :)
Hope that helps.

carbonmatter,
Indeed I was beging to develop a complex. No sleep for me though. Need to do better... must keep... painting......

Cheers,
Tim

This piece has a wonderful industrial tech feel to it.

I also enjoy the sense of space between figures and the narrative it inspires. I feel that there may be something more to the figures than a simple goodbye. The female's (?) garb and the fact that she stands so formally distant sets up a nice tension.

There is definitely a story here!

Hi Tim!

Congrats to your choice award! Was about time !!
I really like the composition and the perspective setup in your artwork.
Can't wait to see some more stuff from you ...

Are you coming to the Adapt Montreal this year?
I hope to see Dan there too.

Fahrija,
Thanks I'm glad you like it.

jouanart,
Wow you see all that? lol I really enjoy paintings with a sense of story to them. I wouldn't say that I'm deliberate about putting it in my own work but I am always trying to consider who might be living in these places I'm painting. I like to try and capture a moment in time.

SquarePixel,
Thanks man, more on the way...

XRAYCHN,
Thanks. I don't think I'd give it five but I'm happy to take five from other people ;)

I-NetGraFX,
Thanks Daniel. Ya it took me a while. Oh well it's good to stay humble. If it was easy to get it wouldn't mean much. Glad you like the painting. I promise there are several new paintings coming soon. I just need to get some spare time back. Yes Dan and I will both be at ADAPT. Should be an awesome time. Will be great hooking up with all you talented Montreal artists. I'm convinced your plotting global domination over there;)

Cheers,
Tim

A lot of people have technical skill out there - you are one of them :) . When you can convey a feeling or emotion without pushing it literally in the viewers face (which you did on this piece) you have made it to the next level. Congrats on this piece.
