Beastie 12-18-2002, 03:48 PM Hello, just working on my low poly skills. Hes 1700 polys and 2108 including the swords. I did this model in a less than 10 hours total. For all you professionals out there, that is a decent amount of time for a low poly right? Also any critiques or comments are welcome.
BTW, he's not done yet and textures to follow soon! :D

I think the time isn't that bad, but the model itself could be better. With 1700 tris, you could've given him more definition (i.e. the shoulders), which is more important than roundness IMHO.

Thanks wanzai. Glad to hear doing ok on speed, this is my second ever low poly character model. And as for the shoulders, actually that is the next step. I wanna use my polys more efficiently and add detail to the entire body. I'm going to end with a count of 2500. I still have work to do. Thanks again, and other critiques are also welcome as always!

Yeah under 10 hours is ok, in the industry you won't always start models from scratch, and you'll find that you get much quicker on the job. So focus on the quality, it's much harder for them to test you on speed :D
The model looks pretty good for 1700, as stated the shoulders need alot of work. Proportionally, his torso looks too long and his thighs a bit too short, so move the whole waist section up by about 1/3 of the belt tassle height, and lengthen the thighs by about half of that. It looks like the elbow could be moved slightly up the arm aswell, but other than that he looks ok.
Possibly the head is a bit wide front to back compared with the width.

:p Ever seen Strider? He is a Capcom character in the Ninja vein. I think one thing to learn from this style is that certain parts of his outift should be baggy, for instance around his thighs.
Since Ninjas need to move swiftly and quietly, their clothing must allow freedom of movement. Right now, he may chafe slightly whilst performing flexible Ninja maneuvers.
just my 2 cents.

thanks for all the comments, porportions are always a bitch, I will apply all those into the model. Thanks a million.

Stryder? Hell yeah, I remember the NES game. Maybe I just have some bad angles of this model shown but he does have poofy pants. Its easier to see this in the backside model. Ill see what i can do but right now his pants poofs are touching. Maybe Ill add some of that movement in the skinning. Thanks for your critique!

did you do any reserach at all?
that is not, in any way, the looks of ninja. I meen, think about it! how on hearth is he going to get the sword of the back?
take your time to look at it!
a ninja was a professional in espionage. they didn't take time to look cool, or "diferent".
I'm not saying that your work is bad, althoug it would be hard for the animator to make im reach for his sword. or to bend his back.
try watching Ninja Scrool, from Manga.
that's what a ninja loked like.
As to the modelling, I think its quite good. just the sholders look a litthe to big. Ninjas where usually skinny, for light wheight.
also in my opinion, fastness is good. it gives you time to look at details.
That's it from me

I guess I should been more clear about my use of the word "ninja". I used the word "ninja" because that would be the best word to describe this character. I figured modeling your everyday ninja is kind of easy, maybe even overdone and wouldnt make much for a demo reel model. His clothing is based on a ninja but a more fun, video game character type. Its more fun to create something original. I'm basically posting to get advice on porportions and aesthetics as I will be posting my progress for critiques. Ive seen ninja scrolls :D (awesome movie) and I think they even used a little artistic licensing in most cases. Once again thanks eveyone for your crits! Here's an update.
