Yea, this sucks, looks like Discreet bought it so they could put it in it's grave for good. Looks like they didn't want anyone else buying it in order to compete with them. So they buy it and sit on it.

do you guys think that a purchase like this could possibly cause innovation in Discreet's own software?
it sounds like they did do it to take out 5d... but... what about the 5d specific features and discreet can now add to their software?

Why is it that whenever a company buys another company people immediately treat them like the bad guy?
This may be benificial to the industry later on. If 5d was going under regardless, then the technology had to go somewhere.

5D was already gone, discreet was just there first to pick their bones
Personally, I'm really happy it was discreet instead of apple anyways..

more likely than not discreet will still continue cyborg and commander just like they do with 3dsmax and media cleaner

3dsmax and cleaner are a lot easier to maintain, cyborg isnt, and in addition, cyborg is in direct competition with their Flame-Inferno productline

You guys should read the link Pyro gave and then read the comments down at the bottom. Many programmers from 5d that were laid off have left comments there. It is pretty clear from the interview that Discreet is buying it to sit on it. The guy from discreet clearly says that they are not going to be releasing either products for sale in the future. None of the developers have been contacted by discreet and also other comments mention that Discreet put a smoke screen up for any possible buyers(Avid) that said if they are interested in putting a bid for Cyborg, that they should know that there is a patent infringement lawsuit that they will inherit with it. I am sure that was big enough problem for anyone not wanting to buy it up. This info is all posted by ex-5d people. Discreet is definatly the evil one on this purchase. But, business is business. If you can't compete, then you buy the competitor and burry their products so everyone will go back to buying yours again.

That would be a rotten shame, because this is definatly one of the best color gradeing tools i've seen to date.

Your thinking of Colussus. 5d never owned it, they just sold/marketed it for a company called Colorfront (they are still selling it):

press release about it here:

Cyborg was a nice compositor, and Commander was a digital daily playback system.

Well, I think it makes sense for Discreet to buy the 5D tools that are commonly used in their advanced systems (ie Inferno, Flame, etc). If they didn't, they would be lost.
Now are they buying 5D assets to kill competition? I don't think so. Why? Because Cyborg, Collosus and Commander, while good technology, were not catching on at all. I think there were only a small handful being used anywhere. In fact, I was at one facility that had 2 and they were never really used in production at all. Still, their systems had some great technology, especially in the retiming tools. So I would suspect Discreet will integrate this technology into their tools.
It's not a hostile takeover, but a company going under and the pieces being available to the highest bidder.
