This is what I`ve been doing lately. It is my first attempt at head modeling. I am using Nurbs. The head shape is basically a cylinder. I started roughing it out, added isoparms to areas with more details...
The mouth geometry was made from lofted curves.
There is a lot more about anatomy I have to figure out, so I guess it will be a slow proces.
So what do you think?

Here is an update. The areas around mouth, eyes, nose and ears are seperate nurbs objects. The overall head shape is also nurbs made from a cylinder. I am still tweaking all parts, but the face is starting to emerge.

Patching the model...I got much work on the mouth area, nose bridge,eyes...but here is just another update...

Looks great! I would add a little bit of musles under the corners of the mouth(the mouth muscles). I know its a WIP so I guess you would add more work on the ears.
The character looks strong but the lips bothers me a bit. I would look up some photo reference heads that has a strong firm look. I guess they would have some lips that goes well with the rest of the head. If its a existing character then I would be wrong if he looks like that.
I really love the subtle bumps you created on the face it gives more lifelikeness like real heads. I would love to see more of your progress.

Its heading in the right direction. There is this spot on the neck where the isoparms meet thats creating a unatural crease. I suggest moving the edge that extends down, forward and in so that it helps define the sternocleidomastoid muscle in the neck.

Is Isoparm the correct term for the darker edges? Man I am really out of touch with nurbs

Hi guys. Thanx for the crits and advice.

jjcoolio: Thank you!
You are absolutely right about his lips, mouth in general,ears... all of these require lots of improvement. I have spent the whole day today trying to make it look better. I`ve tweaked and tweaked and tweaked.....but the more I tried to improve the model, the worse it became :) I`ve been looking at the characters you posted ,especially wireframe shots. Comparing to them, my model has lousy topology , isoparm flow and quite bad patch order... it seems I`ve reached a point where I`m thinking about starting again, from scratch. To be honest, I did use reference pictures for this model, but it turned out nothing like them:shrug:
The proportions are a bit off, but enough to make it look bad.
However, since it`s my 1st head model, I am pretty satisfied. I belive that practice will make my "almost good model" become a great one :)

J_ray: I didn`t pay much attention to the neck area...It would be possible to tweak that part, but as I mentioned above, it would take a lot more planning of the isoparm flow and patch order to make this "dude" look real :)

The dark edges in wireframe shot are patch edges. Yes they are isoparms, so are all other lines in between.

So, thank you again for you crits.
Take care :)

So, I decided to give this guy a small face lift treatment.
I`m definitely gonna stick to this model until I get pretty much satisfied with it.

Well, I don`t know if there is any obvious change in the head model. I have, however tweaked and tweaked and...you know...one can never tweak enough :)
Anyway, a small update:
