I don't know if this is the right forum to post this, but I have a question about a shot that I'm working on.

The shot is basically this... its a locked camera, and in the background is a guy walking from left to right. About half way through the shot, a man In the foreground runs in front of the camera going from right to left. I am removing the man in the foreground.

I pretty much got everything worked out, except for the part where the guy in the FG passes in front of the guy in the BG. I roto'd a part of his walk cycle from earlier on in the sequence, and it blends pretty seamless(still have to clean that up a little). But the problem I am having is with the shadows on the ground. Would you guys paint in the shadows frame by frame? Or how would you go about doing it? ANy help you guys could give would be awesome. THanks.

oh yeah, I probably can't post any images for this shot either, which makes it even more difficult to see weaht im talking about. SOrry

Just roto the shape of the shadow on the ground and darken the plate to match the frames before.

OK, I'm gonna try that before I start painting. But the problem with that is, that the floor has a line painted on it, which the shadow moves across. So If i roto out the shadow from previous frames, the lines on the floor won't match up. But I guess thats still a better starting point, right?

No he's saying to simply roto the shape of that shadow and use that shape to darken the ground (lowering gamma works good), basically creating your own shadow.

ohh, i gotcha. I'll try that tomorrow and let you guys know how it worked. Thanks.

OK, that worked pretty well. THeres still some little jumps between certain frames( the shadow part, and also in the BG in the swaying trees) any tips to help smooth that out? Thnx.

roto the real shadow in the frames before and after so you can actually visualize the animation of the shadow and there is a smoother transition.
