I think I am going to go with a bit of a light-hearted scene. It's Halloween night and the childern of the neighborhood are nearly done with their trick-or-treating. They set out for the foreboding creepy house up on the hill. It looms over all the other homes. Children avoid that street whenever possible, but the giant bowl of candy on the porch is just too much to resist. Who will be brave enough for the journey...?
I think I am going to modify my concept to include glowing eyes and stuff showing through the bushes, tenticles coming from the gutter, and the overhall house will look more like an evil face with the trees being gnarled hands.

Cute idea, and nice layout. They need big bags of candy, especially if it's the end of the night. It'll help drive home the idea that it's halloween, right?
Have fun with it...!

Here is a quick sketch I did of what the house might look like. I want it to look a little more contorted than I have it here - more face-like also. The entire scene will be a sort of twist on the children's imaginations - everything about this house and surrounding area creeps them out...

Now looking at it, I think it needs to be more verticle - like my original sketch...
Thanks for all the crits!

I think I got the general layout of the house figured out - verticle and detailed. I did a quick sketch of what I wanted and then blocked out the shapes with the pen tool in photoshop. I want the house to be pretty distorted and dominating, but retaining all the details of a semi-realistic victorian.

I used the Carson Mansion in California as a color reference. It's a very popular building, so I didn't want the shape of my fictional house to look much like it. The details in my house are inspired from many different victorian homes but doesn't really resemble anything specifically - just drew it out of my head after browsing through a few images of actual buildings.

For some reason I got carried away on the sky tonight. The final image will be verticle - like the sketch...

This is pretty much the finished version of the creepy house. I had a lot of fun with the details. I couldn't tear myself away from it tonight - just had to have some part of my painting done. I think I got the look and feeling I was searching for. I wanted the 'smile' to be subtle but evident, which I think works out alright now and will be event more obvious with the gnarled trees for hands.
As for the children, I have some concept sketchs I'll try to get posted later. The 'knight' will be taking the first steps on the long and winding walk up to the porch. The other children are either amazed at this bravery or in awe of his ignorance - a fine line indeed.

i like the idea very much i think its going to be very good but i dint understand that the thing in the bowl are candys i thought it were flowers(sorry for my english if im writing something stupid here).
and smiling house is a great idea. when you look from far or you look at the thumbnail you can see it easily but when youre looking at the big picture you dont get it easily i think this is just the right taste:buttrock:

Here is a cropping of the 'pupils' I came up with for the house... I like the creepy/mysterious figure on the right paired with the innocent little flower on the left.

I started on the scene a bit - working on the sky, hills, and a little bit on the foreground fence. Eventually there will be more bushes, weeds, fences, and such with scarey little creatures and eyes peering from behind them (at least, that's what the children think they see).
Thanks for all the comments!

It's been a while since I had much of a chance to work on this... Just working on some more little details - rendering out the pavers and a little of the fence.
Enjoy
