My first reel was two shots, which I found to be too little, but because I broke it down I streched it to 1:30, and most companies said that was fine...

I say you need between 1 and 2 minutes, so if you don't have breakdowns (bastards, for not letting you do that), you need several shots.

The most important reel rule is, "only show your best stuff", also known as "your reel is only as good as your worst shot".... so, if your shots look bad because of bad 3D renders, then maybe you shouldn't put them there.

But, you said they were from a two hour film... if it's a fairly well known film, put it on the reel, no matter how bad the CG is. Having well known stuff on your reel is priceless.

Maybe you can show us the shots?

Good luck,
- Jonas

A reel is there to show your best work. But when i look at reels here i want to see a variety of skills. I want to see you can key, track, intergrate live action/3D, comp minutures, use of 2d elements (dust/smoke/fire/water ect). Good understanding of color correction. Other skills i like to see are warping/morhing but shot that have these seem to be less these days.

If you only have 0ne shot then use that and if it is good you will have a shot at getting work.

I think it is important to show your best work and also to try and show some of the work that went into it as well. In the process of redoing my reel at the moment and I while I wait for some footage to become available I am constanly trying to reasses everyshot.

I think yu need to show your absolute best work and not even worry about things that don't look nice even if they have a good technical aspect or whatever. Leave that kind of stuff for an interview. Use your reel to land the interview and then if you have something that is relavent for the gig and you want to show it bring it along !

REMEBER:

Your reel will always be judged by the worst thing on it. A single mediocre shot can bring down the quality of the whole thing !

Well, there's Putfile and whatnot... I have no experience with them, but try to go to the Animation or FXWars board and start downloading animations, they are scattered over a variety of free hosting sites.

Cheers,

I thought I would add an entry to this thread, from an entry I made a year ago, with lots of input from other sources. Check it out, maybe it'll help you.
