View Full Version : Gorilla. King Kong Style
Lupin 12-17-2002, 11:18 PM If anyone saw this on cgchat, then just ignore this post. (I deleted this post in the WIP section when I moved it here, so theres no double posting. :) )
This is a game model I did that was tossed into the trash can. I added a few more polys to the face and thats about it. We're dealing with really low numbers for our creatures. So he's *real* low poly. heh heh. He hasnt had his skin weights painted on fully, so his skeleton doesnt behave as good as it should, although, its not to shabby. I also added quick blend shapes to his face so his eyes and mouth can move... Not that you can tell from still images. His UVs havent been mapped though so he's just plain shaded. If your wondering, he's 1600 triangles... Anyhow, heres the model.

And... just for the hell of it, I threw together a quick "city" style render. Just for the King Kong feeling.
:)
Excellent - love to see him all hairy - Keep it up
P.s. Think his legs need a little workin - too small me thinks!!

Its a really low poly model, so it could use some more polys here and there, but heres the wireframe. :)

Cool, mesh looks pretty clean. He looks like he'd have lots of character animated *hint*hint

Seems like a fun big guy to animate around. Climbing (lowpoly) buildings, smashing things up, planes flying around trying to stop the guy.. yeh, fun.
I'll just make the minor suggestion of seperating his colour up into just a few basic colourgroups, ie. making his teeth white for instance and such. It's like a job that takes all of 49 seconds to do, but I have nothing else to crit :) Well apart from saying a texture would do good on him, but that's sort of obvious and likely you're already planning to do it, or you're not doing it at all.
One thing I'm not fond of though, is you calling this a "really low poly model". I don't intend for some massive war on this, but unless I've missed something I can't see where 1600 tris', even by the near future's standard, is considered "very low poly". My take on it is that a really lowpoly character starts at.. hell idunno, the 250/300 tri mark I'd say, and starts fading out as the 700/800-ish mark is closed in on. I guess that's just an opinion when it gets right down to it though, we're not dealing with a standardized format here :) .. so.. if you feel 1600 is very lowpoly that's just how it is I suppose.

Gaggle: I'd certainly agree that saying this model is "really low poly" is entirely subjective, but for the XBox or GameCube, 1600 polys isnt much for a character. Our current game has at times 10+ characters not including player characters on the screen all visable at once without much of a slowdown. Coming from a development background on the Nintento64 though, I understand what you mean. :) I've spent lots of late nights working with the 300 poly limit... I think the monkey was originally around 1000 polys, but I added more to him after he was cut from the game. I used to think of really low poly at the 300 level, but I'm bumped it up some for the new consoles to <1500 for low, <3000 med and >5000 high, entirely game subjective though... That said, I'm still a firm believer that just because you can use 3000 polys for a character doesnt mean you have to if you can do it with good textures and modeling for 2000. :) Anyhoo, I'm rambling. Glad you like him. :)

Yeah, when I moved I no longer had cable for my internet, and since they only allowed me to update my page if I was connected to the net with their line, it seemed pointless to keep it up. I'm close to registering a doman and tossing something up, just have to get my lazy butt in gear in do it. :)
