Wow, it's been a long time since I've posted anything on CGTalk. So I'm really excited to be part of this challenge. Some concept sketches coming soon...

The challenge introduction suggested that I do a piece with small characters against a big background.

However, I like doing something that I can really identify with. At the moment I am travelling a lot for my job, so I am used to Beginning Journeys. Sometimes it's exciting - a new country, new experiences and new people.

But sometimes it's sad - especially missing loved ones.

My image should show the emotions of two people waiting for take-off in an aeroplane. The one person is excited/adventurous and illuminated by light through the small window. The other person is sad, even scared, and is sitting in semi-darkness.

This is going to be a difficult one. It's a simple concept that should pack a lot of emotional punch. And as 80% of the image will be the faces of the characters, the expressions need to be super realistic (artistically and emotionally).

A tough one, but with the help of you guys I think I'll be able to pull it off.

I'm used to drawing unrealistic cartoons. So if I color people, they are usually a light brown color.

For this project I did study of photographs under natural light and tungsten light. It's amazing what colors the face is really made up of!

Under natural light there's a lot of grays, light purples, even greens in the hair...

Under tungsten there's a lot of reds, browns and oranges. Colors very close in hue...

I want to use these studies as a color reference.
