How to fix, well show a top view of your lighting rig so I have an idea of howyou lightng, also try adjusting your phong a bit.
ThirdEye
12-18-2002, 05:37 PM
What do u mean with "also try adjusting your phong a bit"? Anyway i used two area lights casting 1500x1500 soft shadows + a hdri-like sky object
LucentDreams
12-18-2002, 06:02 PM
sorry by phong I meant the smoothing tag, just set it to a higher degree should help a bit, this is a common problem with two and 3 point lighting. Another option is to adjust the overall scale of you object, and adjust the sampling on the soft shadows.

Using a little chanlum might help reduce the noticeability of the artifacts some.

It doesn't look like a shadow problem, it must be a surface illumination problem...
To remove this hard transition, you could adjust either the material's diffuse falloff or the light contrast. Negative values produce softer transition.
:bounce: Hope it'll work !

A combo of negative diffuse falloff and chanlum removed the problem, thank you guys!

Thank you very much malcOlm, I'm trying to arrive to Renč Morel realism level using Cinema 4D even if this is my first head, I've spent a couple months on it so far :wavey:

I use a contrast value of -30 for almost all my light sources - makes the lighting much softer and gets rid of that problem.
Great head model btw!

Thank you very much Janine, what about your settings for camera? I found useful a 120 focal lenght for heads...

120mm is a good length for a portrait shot. The longer the lens setting the less perspective distortion you'll get. That's why some high-end fashion photographers use really huge zooms.
Head's looking excellent! Very good job on the texturing.

Thank you very much Adam, I found 120-130 is a good measure for portraits, i have to study a lot photographic tecniques for lighting too ;)

Anyway the model that made me think "why can't I make anything so perfect?? By the way I want to try..." is this:

On the note about camera lens lengths, for those who decide to use a profile and front view photograph to model a head it is also recommended you use photo's shot with a longer lens so that your reference image is more accurate, standard cameras anologue or digital by themselves will produce distortion.
Nice head and texturing, looks nicer with chanlum for as well, could you show an render of the mesh and of the model with one light (you can keep them small just curious to study)
ThirdEye
12-20-2002, 03:54 PM
here's the mesh (i know there are some problems in the mouth region but i'll change the topology for my next head, i don't have to animate it) and the shading with 2 Hypernurbs iterations.

for a first head that is one of the best attempts I have seen, fairly clean meash some weird areas as you said mainly around the mouth, try to keep those edge loops going all the way, but otherwise awesome job lot of good work coming out recently.

One of the best skin textures I have seen anywhere. The Eyes are still giving it away as a CG guy. Do these eys have an dactual lense and transparency etc or are they just an image?
Great work. Phil

Phil Mc Nally tells me that my own texture (my first one) is one of the best he has seen anywhere? :surprised I can't believe it...
The eyes are fully modeled with lens and so on, probably a better illumination can give 'em justice. Thank you very much Phil, I'm really glad :)

it is really a great texture, because of all the imperfections like scars ect. thats why it looks so much more human than one with no imperfections or a symetrical face

it's looking really great thirdeye! you've been really persistent with this and kept improving it till you're getting exactly what you wanted, which is great
btw it's good to see you here captain :)
thirdeye, are you planning to make a full body to go with this? it'll be interesting to see where you take it (though you may want a break after having worked on the same model for so long).
maybe you should post a tute on the making of your skin texture (it seems to be one of the most asked for things going, but there aren't many good tutorials on teh web delaing with this i've found).

Thank you very much mdme, i don't think I'll add the full body, not now, i'm tired of this head, i want to finish it soon. I have to say this experience has been probably the most instructive 3D experience so far for me. I started using 3D in a studio drawing and rendering buildings (I am an architecture student) and then I really enjoied 3D but I've never had any kind of experience with organic modeling. I learned a lot about poly box modeling, edgeloops and this kind of stuff with this head... I learned how to make good textures even if these textures are really destroying my computer (3 *.psd maps, 70 megs each), but it has been quite funny too. I learned a lot about human anatomy, i kept watching italian famous ancient statues like Michelangelo's and Bernini's. I see these statues nearly everyday in my life here in Rome, but only now I can really appreciate their beauty. I have to say my next 3D work will be another head for a couple reasons. 1) I really enjoied this kind of things, i've been astonished by Renč Morel, Julian_J, Stuzzi, Ulf Lundgren and Robert Kuczera works, many people said me that i'm not so far from their realism level and I'm really happy, I'm winning the challenge against myself ;) 2) I really want to improve my head modeling skills, I think I'll start a full body only when I'll be really satisfied with my head modeling skills. Then will come the rigging step... ;)

Oh for the tutorial... I've simply followed these indications http://www.lost.com.tj/Ulf/artwork/3d/behind.html and exploited the power of C4D gi and chanlum. ;) The rest is simple photoshop painting. :)

excellent work... i guess living in Rome surrounded by all that beautiful sculpture... it was only a matter of time before you made your own great head model :)
i love the solidity of form that those artists had... i mean, you can take just one element form the whole object and it's good as a sculpture in itself, it's just incredible. you could literally just take David's nose and it's such a satisfying shape, the ammount to learn from these sculptures, you're so lucky to be where you are. (not to mention being able to get real tartuffo on the square (not that nasty one with the tutti fruiti ice cream... but the chocolate lovers paradise one *drool*)

thanks :) that's gone straight into my bookmarks... hehe you're making me hungry with all this food talk (italy has the best food in europe imo...) so time for me to make my own pasta, drizzled in olive oil, a little salt, some herbs and a nice tomato sauce... (the simple things are so often the best) right off to cook!

Not to make you even hungrier but tomorrow I'll move to Apulia (south Italy) for holidays, I have many relatives there... Well In Apulia they have the hugest fields of corn (for pasta), of olives (for oil) and tomatos (for sauce) in Italy. My granny's really good at cooking, if you come to Italy let me know... ;)

that's great work thirdeye... but you have some shadow artifacts still on it (the diagonal lines accross the forehead) at least it looks like shadow artifacts from the bias being too small possibly? (or is it simply the compression?).. anyhow great work, amazing for a first ever head :) now you should go and have some of that great italian food to celebrate!

he Awesome render I've learned quite a bit from your adventures in doing this head, I'm using the contrast option on my lights a bit more (not that I've been doing a lot of lighting in the last few days but a bit and I can see the difference)
What I would like to see is a image showing all the channels and the final composite

Compression artifacts... on the tif they're not visible... it's a pity we're allowed to post only 40 kb max pics... and i don't have any webspace at the moment, i have to find a remedy ;)
And yes, here is 12.52 am, it's time to think about lunch... I think I'll have some spaghetti with tomato, tuna and chilli

If you can nail the lighting/contrast,and get the eyes looking more realistic its one that will definitely put you and C4D on the map so to speak :)
