After Nearly two years of work by myself I decided to try and turn this project into a Collab project. The original thread can be found here on Cgtalk. (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=241470&page=1&pp=15)
As I said above I have been working on this project for about two years now this means writing imagining, modelling, planning etc. trying to create a world in which my story can take place.
The first idea was just to make a lab. with all kinds of weird things in it. Wanted to make something like that since I discoverd LEGO hehe. then I wanted to give life to the lab, give it a meaning a use from this came the omicron city idea and once you start a city there has to be a story and the Omicron/Black Goddess idea was born. Since then I have been modelling the city as you can see in the other thread or a bit lower for some more pictures. Enough talk.
here is the general idea of the film (the story is still being written and new ideas come everyday and it can be improved changed etc (I hope with some of your help).

The film will take part in this huge metropolis. In the center of this city is a huge laboratory the lab kind of started taking over the city and governs it now for the biggest part. This means Police and Military forces are on the labs side (at least for the moment they are) The city will have its modern part and a classical part the older part build in a gothic style. The part is divided by a river. This division is more then just a visual one. In the modern part lives what we call the human race (at least normally some weird things things happen in the lab) in the old part the vampires. The live in community and do the best they can but vampires are largely penalized by the way they are forced to live making some of them rebelious. In the middle of this "mess" we have Katherine Mc Lean, her vampire name is Abigaile, she is part of the vampire clan : Denestkim. she has a commun name to work in the city illegaly and has to hide her true identity but she refuses to live amongst the other vampires. The Denestkim is the most important clan in the city. In total their are 5 Vampire clans. Her sister Nylinn is one of the rebelious kind in the family (there is a whole legend behind this familly ). Katherine works in the lab where she meets a guy Jake Atkins. Jake is the commun normal guy in the story working in the lab. Katherine and Jake get to know each other and its harder and harder for Katherine to hide her identity. Their impossible love will have its role in this story. Jakes best friend has an accident and dies. The mystery around his dead leads to the lab and Katherine and Jake will have to investigate what is going on. Little did they know what they were going to find...
The story is set in a world where humans and vampires try to live together. The scenes are set in a rather dark environnement (Resident Evil, Underworld, Blade and all time classic: Interview with the vampire). Action, Suspens, Fantasy is what this is going to be all about.

that is for a short idea of the story the setting etc.
now comes the question if there are people willing to work with me on such a project and share the fun I have imagening all this and share this all with the people on cgtalk and beyond if possible ;).
For the moment the team is rather inexistend.
There is ronson2k who has given and is giving and will be giving (I hope) some great help. on both the story side and modelling side.
there is Maikeul (has made some posts on the forums) who is ready to help on the modelling of the city (the modern part)
and there is me who has been doing the biggest part till now (but I hope that it'll change with some help from these forums).
so for now we can need every bit of help you people are ready to offer : concepts, 3d, animation, texturing, storyboarding etc etc.
a whole new team actually. I wont be asking like 20h a month or something. there is absolutly no rush or something. just an idea and some fun in trying to create something nice.
For the moment I'm setting up a forum so that there is some way of comminucation next to the msn or email part (admin@3d-caveman.com (http://forums.cgsociety.org/admin@3d-caveman.com) for emails and jveebergen21968@hotmail.com (http://forums.cgsociety.org/jveebergen21968@hotmail.com) for msn). the website is up (www.3d-caveman.com (http://www.3d-caveman.com)) but could use some fixes (btw if somebody knows some flash or something ;) ).

Euhm what else can I say. I just hope to have some fun working on this project and hope to share the fun with you. so if you feel like joining in let me know by mail or on the forums or on msn with some work if you have otherwise without work and just motivation should also do the trick ;)

Good to have you come back to hang out with us in the collab forums.
So what's your production game plan. I mean it seems to be very open.
Is there a script, or story boards, animatics...
What I'm trying to say is that for an example....I see that there is no textures on a building ,
and if someone wanted to texture it, how would they know how hi they should make the resolution of the texture, without knowing how close the camera will go to the object.
So to help figure that out they would need to see maybe a storyboard shot and know
how big the frame of your final movie will be. so they can know what quality to make the textures. I hope that made sense.
Do you already know those things ? I have never done any out door stuff before.
so things like cities and buildings , I wounder how people plan out working with such LARGE objects, the same thing goes for large space ships too ...

Thanks Dogmad and Boy1da. If only one day I could get as far as you 2 would be great. hope to take this project as far as that.
For the script. There is a script. not completly written out on paper but it is in my head. for the moment I wrote down 6 complete scenes that could be worked on right away.
The storyboards aren't done yet because I kinda "suck" in drawing so storyboard artists are more then welcome. I did some quick drawing didn't really look like something but it is ok to work with but real storyboards would be a lot better.
For exemple if we take the city as in the pictures above I won't make any close ups of the city like that. there is a skyline and a general idea that should be "massive" "huge" etc. so for this the textures don't have to be that high rez. but some parts of the city will have to be high rez in modelling and texturing. for exemple the region around the lab or the street of Katherines appartment or for the gothic part the region around the castle/sanctuary.
These things I "know" I have to write them down because it is all very much in my head. I only wrote down the major things. this way it stays rather open also for when somebody comes up with some good ideas there isn't a problem of putting it all in.
The exact plan for know would be to first try and make a 30 sec trailer. then a 2-3 minutes trailer and then the actual film.
Just some technic stuff. I work with 3ds max 6 but there isn't a problem if you would like to join but you have another package as long as you can transform things to a .obj file or to a 3ds max file.

Hehee...look who's here :D :applause: . How are you doing man? Long time no see. I remember this project of yours since the beggining of my lotr :D .So you are now turning it into a collab. This might be hard, since i found that is hard to get ppl involved.

Thanks for the tip on contacting people (for the moment I got two other people who contacted me who would like to work on the project. if you have some more tips on how to run/setup projects like these (you or anyone else) would be great.

Just a suggestion but you my want to reconsider the big gown costume for your characters. Especilly if they do a lot of motions, It's potentially a technical nightmare to make it look good?
City looks great BTW!

Thanks Softdistortion for your comments. I agree that the big gown is going to be hard to model and I don't think it will actually fit in for the other gows it will be tough to do but I have a couple of rituals in the story for which these dresses would be great but in these rituals there won't be a lot of action so I hope to get this done :)

We now have lacrevette on the team as a Character modeller and designer.
and we have FE_Cyril on board also who is a choreographer for battle and action scenes.

Yup the "monsters" are going to be in the battle. I think that there are going to be two legged mechanical flying creatures ;) or something like that.

Looks pretty great to me. I like everything here. The sketches are incredible. I just one question about the the sword. It looks like it has a hollow center in the blade? I found this site for sword parts (http://www.snowspine.com/armory/anatomy.html)? Could help while making one. The sword looks a little less then protective currently.
Given it's like a Barbarian type of sword (Broadblade) it perhaps could have a bit more protection around the hilt. The added weight wouldn't be much and the added weight it currently affords would make the protection around the hilt would make it a more effective weapon. A lighter sword would have a problem slowing a blow but the heavier one would sniff at such a blow. Making the added protection even more effective.. This wouldn't mean changing the design at all you could perhaps add some added material to the hilt extending it enough to catch the blade of an attacking sword and hold. See Email Sword..

The protective blades could be thickened or built into a greater fan of blades but I was working fast. A greater fan could then be used for closer combat.

Hi again,
Well after a first week of collaboration the team has grown to a 10 men strong one so I'm really happy to have turned the project this way.
Next to that the website has had a 100 visites in a week that is even greater.
We now have our own forum and things are getting organised and are getting rolling.

we started working on the teaser we plan to make just some short animations of 1min length. script is finished and a general pre-viz has been made by 3d-effects to see how it looks. we are working on the more detailed pre-viz and high-poly models etc.

Cool looking APC. I would take a look at current Crowd Control vehicles for inspiration on this one. SWAT vehilcles have a few functions.
Going on Scene
1. Stealth
2. Safety
3. Large Capacity
So you would want something that is non discript (FEDX/UPC truck). In all the TV I've ever scene a SWAT vehicle in they are usually unmarked Delivery Van things (Black or Blue).
Granted when ever a SWAT vehicle is used it has already escallated to the point where stealth isn't so much of an issue anymore. However there could be times when you would want that as a feature and in those times a "Disguised" Vehicle would be easy to get in and out adding to the safety of the personel.
I have Janes book of Armoured Vehicles (bit old now though about 5 years) but still as UTD as printing (they haven't reprinted that one yet AFAIK). Not to go and totally change the concept of your APC for a SWAT team or APC Military Responce Truck. However a few points to concider with your APC (if it is to be used as a SWAT Vehicle).
Wheels instead of Tracks.
Let's start off with the wheeled version first
Wheels are faster and easier to replace/repair. They have most usually (especially for these situations) self sealing tires making them nearly unstoppable from a tire standpoint. While repairs are going to take some time (tire replacement) they will be alot faster then resetting a track(s) on a tracked vehicle. As they roll on tires they have a high ground clearance and turning center. They are 2/3rds as heavy and twice as fast as a tracked vehicle. They do have a bit of stealth in that they sound like a diesel truck or bus (I've ridden in one) as they are both powered by the same engine type. Wheels will ride on any urban surface without damaging it for the most part. They can do things that a truck can't like go through walls or over obstruction unlike that of a truck (armoured).
There are a few down sides but these can be offset.
1. Smaller capacity (offset by increased number of vehicles)
2. Can't climb like a tracked vehicle (not a problem so much in an urban enviroment)
3. Incresed Size (reducing access over a treaded vehicle)
Tracked Vehicles:
Tracked vehicles where good when that was all you had and before tire tech got really good. They could go through anything although slower they were unstoppable. The low clearance gave better capacity and made for fewer needed vehicles. This in turn increased security (less of a target). They can turn in place and like a tank can go backward or forward at the same speed and adjility. They are a a bit smaller then the wheeled version making for greater access too tighter spaces.
For a SWAT vehicle though speed and stealth are key. This is where the wheeled vehicle surpases the tracked.

I think that last vehicle is a Santa Barbara BLR, APC. This company is now owned by General Dynamics.
This ONE (http://www.policeman.sk/Police%20vehicles/PVAS.jpgVehicle%5B/url) aswell. What you probably want is a LAV (Light Armoured Vehicle) type. These can come with a turret but usually not. You also need to think of the job for these guys. Going through walls and the like is going to be something they want to be able to do.

I have the second edition myself (it has been updated since) just found that out...?

thanks for your feedback. I agree with you about the wheels hehe but I actually chose chains on purpose. the fights we see are part of a war and the swat/army doesn't need to be that stealth but this will be the more heavy transport they have. to transport 20 people at once and don't have any problems with obstacles etc they don't have to be very quick but this will make it vulnerable as well something new to play with
This wont be the only transport/vehicule of the swat/army I'm planning on making some other vehicules quicker and with tires. With the sites you gave me that shouldn't be a problem any more ;)

The planning of the first scene of the teaser is almost finished after that we have to model the swat and vampires, rig them, animate, texture etc. hope to show something soon

A small update today.
A closer look at the swat members. or at least there outfit. They have a complete body protection to avoid any biting from vampires well at least that is what they hope for ;).

Looks great. I was thinking maybe some breathing apperatice for teargas/nervegas/non O2 enviroments (smoke/fire) protection aswell. Seeing as he is wearing a full faced helmet. While I'm on the helmet thing perhaps some night vision aswell (thicker face plate). You could also incorperate a thermal vision thing in there aswell. To be totally tricked out.. I'm thinkng they use them in Police Helo Ops (currently) so a personal unit would be futuristic but not that far off. JST...

normally there is some sort of gasmask in the helmet if you look at the front of it (I mean it could be anything but a gasmask was what I was thinking of in the first place)
I think that in the face plate there will be nightvision/thermal because it would be the only way to really distinguish vampires because they'll look quite a lot like humans :).
Well Lacrevette started working on one of the characters of the swat team. I'll make it the swat team leader lol. I like it a lot lot lot :)

Have you started to break down the camera shots yet ?
That way maybe you can cheat by not having to model everything that will not be seen.
If your movie is character based you will come to find that most of your shots will be
close up and the sets are not seen in full most of the time.
As for wide shots low poly models should do the trick with really good textures.
If you are gonna do a zoom in then you can composite a hi poly model into
a bunch of lo poly models , you only need to make the building that you zoom into hi poly.

We "kinda" started to break down the teaser shots (the 60 sec. animation to see how long this takes, quality etc etc.) but while doing that we came up with a couple of ideas that changed everything again hehe. we wanted to use one camera but it became really dull and anoying to look at. so we started over again this weekend :)
It will be character based so there are already different versions of the different characters like the low/med and high polys (not completly modelled out though but oh well we're not in a hurry ;) ). I'm glad we dont have to make everything high poly. the city is already giving me a hard time rendering in one run (btw if somebody knows how to setup layer rendering in max 8 :D) that is why we try to make a couple of highrez buildings to make complete streets that will be filmed up close. :)

Layer rendering in max is pretty easy.
In my project I tend not to do too much multi pass type renders,
in example I don't do a spec pass a bump pass a defuse pass.
I do more of separating objects like character from background type of renders.
If you get what I mean ?
Hope you have a lot of hard drive space. you will need it.
And what program will you use to put the layers back together ?
I also recommend that you focus on one shot only.
If you try to produce the full 60 seconds at once you will spread your energy too thin.
If you just pick one shot , maybe that shot will last 3 seconds.
In that shot as an example you may have a vehicle driving down the street.
If you can see that shot trough and do that in good quality....
It will give you a good idea how to improve the next time and you will have a kool shot to
show others ,and give a good idea how it will look when you are done.
It took me many months just to get my main character to take a drink.
Because I had to first create the character a made sure it fully worked,
and to top it off her lower body is not even in the shot.
Then I had to make the set, and again you only see one small section of one wall
in a 4 wall set. Then lighting and rendering then doing sound....
So pre-production of your shots is always a real good idea too.
Do a quick version of your shot, that way you will see what is missing before you
go at it hard. wow, I didn't even mean to type so much D'OH !

just as you said. I would like to avoir the spec, bump map etc passes but cut down like for the first scene : city, cars etc.
I hope to have enough hard drive space :s otherwise it will be buying another hard disk :s.
We just finished the teaser script for a 60 secs animation. we devided the whole thing into four scenes that will be subidived while storyboarding (phase we should start this week normally I hope (btw if there are some good storyboarders out there)
after that every shot will have its previz and then it is up to the hardest part make everything of very good quality :)

Thanks BOY1DA. I'm trying to give a rather "classy" feeling to the vampire kind of the story. Of course these kinda outfits will only be for some ceremony's etc I've planned but I like that style alot so I'm hoping that the modelling will look as great as the drawings :)

That model looks real good, nice anatomy.
My only question is why model the character nude ?
I mean will it be seen nude in the movie ?
If not it would save allot of time just to model characters with the
outfits as they will be seen in the movie. If you are modeling the body because of cloth sims.
Then you should be able to use something like a stock model mesh for the collisions
you won't see it anyway. I tend to delete most of the body parts under the clothes .

For your Character you didnt model her body? just her head, arms/hands and the rest is outfit?

Well we need a bit of help here :)
We're wondering about our lab guards so Laur2000ad came up with this sketch for the guard. I'm not really sur it fits in the project but he is convinced it fits hehe so because the project is rather democratic and all we decided to make a post in here to get some other people's reaction.
So to be clear. I like the outfit except the helmet (it looks to futuristic, scubadiving like) laur2000ad says it tis in because the lab is weird and they look weird so that is what should be the thing.
So please please comment on this one :)

Yea, I can see what you are saying Jozef...
I like the idea of trying to make it look strange, and it also looks a bit like
the head gear that the guys have in them micro chip labs... So I think that
he is probably going toward that look not a diving look.
Maybe he can make some small adjustments, based on the other
guard concept so it has the same feel, but tweak the helmet to look
a bit more stream line and conform to the head more.
And make the lenses on the face smaller so they don't look like diver ports.
So that they look more like optic sensors instead.
I drew a doodle to show what I'm trying to say. Hope that helps.

hm awesome progress! that character looks SO good, if you can keep the whole level of quality up to that one, err... well god would be jealous i guess.
anyway, what's the cars purpose? are they only to fill the streets, like background, low detail-stuff, or do they get like bigger roles? if they do, iÄd say theyre a bit to simple/low detailed, especially the first two.
but anyway, really outstanding work, keep it up ladies!:)

I really love this project. I wish I could help out but unfortunately I'm working on my own film right now.
The main problem I find with this whole thing is that the quality level of the work is not consistent and so some of the models don't look like they fit in the same universe. For example, the city streets and Sylvain's vampire and the other buildings are at a much higher quality level than some of the cars, especially the last red one posted. I think this is just due to the skill levels of the artists and is not by any means an attack on any of the modelers. I think you guys should help each other to bring everything up to the same standard so that final piece will be amazing.
Great work though, I can't wait to see this finished.

Thank you Karabo you have done some great work yourself aswell (had a little tour on your website and all :) impressive) if you have some time left to model a model or two feel free to jump in ;).
It is true what you're saying about the quality of different models. I think that all modelers we have in our team have talent but some have way more experience then others and we try to help out eachother as much as possible one of the main things I think in collab project like these. Some of the vehicules are ment to be low poly but then again even in lowpoly they should look conveincing but the red vehicule that was posted was intented to be a highrez model lol and I was really happy when I saw it. So I think I'll have to tweak my texturing skills a bit to give this vehicule its true value it deserves :)

Maestro GameFace: Well I think we can use your help a lot. the thing is because you are in maya I suppose u need full characters to animate and probably need to rig them in maya? I dont know if you can rig in maya or not or if you would like rigged characters :). I've been testing motionbuilder though and seems the going between the two packages goes easier but to avoid problems I'd like to give some shots where we only need two or three characters animated to avoid having to scale down the animation and stuff (dont know if thats really clear what I'm saying lol) but give you a shot you can complete and we just need to render in max :)

Looking good, your car modeling skills seem to be getting better all the time.
What render will you use in the end ?
I just remembered that I have a "VW JETTA" model I made awhile back.
If you want to use it let me know, I may have to dig up some pix to show you.
It it just the shell and it's wheels though.
I seen the head animation, maybe you should skin the coat on it's own.
Did you use a jaw bone for the face ? Working on fetch I found out that
having a jaw bone gives you some more flexibility for making faces.
Anyway I'm sure you will work it out just fine.

We'll be going for mentalray. It comes free with max so we'll try that one out. I had the chance to check brazil and vray and well brazil is a bit to instable to me and vray well don't know. So we went with mentalray :). (that was a lot to say nothing lool)

Ah yes for the coat you're right working on the skinnning of it but because it isnt a complete rig but just the head and the neck max doesnt like it and wants to include the vertexes all the way down the coat which is useless so trying to figure that part out :).
for the head there is a jaw bone but the jaw (the corners of the mouth) dont really move like they should do. looks like they are pulled down somehow instead of the way they should move so right now I'm spending time in front of the mirror to see how my jaws really move while talking lol :)

Here is an image of the car model, it's not futuristic or anything.
It is actually a 2001 Jetta....
It needs a bit of work but not too much you pretty much have to shell it and mirror the other side.
If you still want to use it you may do whatever you like with it.
I put it on my server in the same place I put the files for the Tera model when
we were doing the motion builder stuff just look for a folder with your name on it .
The model was made in MAX 6 .

I hate when that happens...I have the same (but reverse) thing with one of the big airships we have on our project...looks good close, but then far away the dirt patterns look like a million little blotches.:)
Your texture all looks pretty good except for the bump you mention...You likely know what it needs and will fix it. However, if it's for backgrounds, in your distant shots look perfect.

Yup its really annoying so to avoid switching between textures I maybe set up two exactly the same locations but one for close ups and one for distant shots but most of this will never be seen up close, lucky me :)
we have been recieving some great help today from a member of scifi meshes (Ramiel for those who might know him ) who has been texturing a warehouse today :)

I think this might work aswell, it would be less expensive in an econimical perspective.... it would just ask a change of the suspension system instead of cutting out sides of the car and adding other mechanism then those in place?

I like your proyect it has a lot of scenarios and a epic feel to it .. i had almost a year of experience in 3d i work mostly with maya and renderman .. i feel like my thing is shading and lightin ..last month i learn alot about GI and arch type of renders this month i decide to build a hangar im working on that this week..

We're still hanging in there... Last weeks have been rather calm around the project with me be overloaded with work and preparation for my move to Canada (Three months left muhaha :) ) So well we decided to focuss more on the story (our script writer or rewriter went a little nuts so well she left.... so it is back to the writing part)
Well we kinda realised (or I realised) is that there was a massive lack of organisation from my part and that if we don't organise the project would be doomed... So well we'll be moving slowly the idea being to have a script to work with at the end of the year before going all wicked with modelling and concepting etc. We'll continue modelling of course there are some things about which we're sure we'll need them so those will go on the rest well will need to wait :)
So in our attempt to improve organisation I've been working on a scripting tool that would allow easy management and organisation of the project. It is getting quite complete and big but well better take some time to do it good.
So I thought I could throw a few pics online of the tool (I'll be realising it as freeware once it is working so that other collabs can use it (had a little talk about it with Softdistortion as well))

So this is what it looks like. As you can see you'll have the possibility to do plenty of things. Make a complete storyline with images, put your script in it, make clans, characters, technologies etc in a structured way following a sheet with characteristics on it with the most common info on it.
Now to make it usefull for a collab team it is definitly necessary to be able to share the info so there is an export function that with an XML and XSL file creates a layout as a webpage which is uploadable to the internet. You get the xsl file with the program so you can adapt it to your needs :) here is a small sample of the xml+xsl file

Just asking, but what happened to the writer (he/she left the team)? Why I ask? Because I'm a fan of the project and if you could spare a couple of words here if you think it PERTINENT, otherwise nevermind :twisted: . What part/positions are occupied? You should give a little review of your TEAM here, so people can see who makes what and if someone has time could join in, right? Perhapc making a little review what happened last year or two (what happened in the project department), because from the point of a normal viewer and fan I only see postponning and nonrealisation of the project? Call me pesimist If you want.
I know you have a work in real life and probably the members of the team, but if you could give yourself and your team some small deadlines I think you could go forward. Don't do a super-cool-badass-stateoftheart-homepage now, loosing precious time. Make a simple one and concenrate on theproject. Make the homepage as you guys proceed.
I don't know... like you said script untill DEC 07, model of main characters untill MAR/APR 08, basic walkcicles and run cicles untill MAY/JUN 08 (in the meantime you construct also some of the scenes). A short trailer/teaser untill end of AUG 08.
Please, don't take this as a negative critique, but I see you're in a point now from where you are unable to go froward. I'd like to STRESS again that I'm a fan here and Am ROOTING for you all so I'd really like to see this project going forward!

Why she left/got kicked is because she went a little wicked on us saying things as: "I don't know why I'm doing this because well you people are useless, there is nothing in it for me" etc. etc. so well it was getting a little to annoying and well even "painfull" with some of the insults we recieved so time to do some cleaning ;)
I'll go through your different points as I read them to give some sort of answer to all the questions :)
you are right about the fact that the project isnt moving on... One of the reasons was that we spent a year rewriting the script (might be long... but we had the time to work on it only a couple of hours a week) during that time some people joined, others left (mainly for lack of time reasons) and well we kinda got stuck.
Add to that my lack of organisation the last year and you arrive at the point we are now ^^.
That is why I've put everything down to "basics" and setup the new forum (which only took a day or two ;) so we didnt loose much time there, but with this new website we can organise files, tasks etc. which is a big need to get things going again).
to go on with the planning you gave it is rather impossible. When I started the project as a collab the points you annonced were planned liked that but never turned out like that. We kinda never know what might happen. You assign a task to somebody and all of a sudden the person disappears so when the deadline approaches you're left with nothing and well that is kinda the risks of collab working and it wont change as long as we stay a collab :). We had that with the two teasers that were planned and finally decided to work only on the main and forget about the teasers and just take footage from the main avoiding double work
This is the main reason why we'll take some more time to work out the script in detail. even if we go beyond the december limit and once it is finished have something solid that might even take omiQron out of the collab world but that is just dreaming for now.
Another something that comes closer and closer isi that at the end of this year I'll be leaving for Vancouver and will be attending the 3d program at VFS so during that year I'll be a little absent as a team lead and so we decided as a team to take that year to work essentially on short movies. Imrpove skills, have fun and increase our portfolios. During that time we'll go on with working out omiQron and when I'm back we can pick the whole project back up
(euhm this becoming rather long lol, sorry for that)
To sum it all up: yups we've put ourselfs in a rather big mess at the moment, and without a decent script we can't go any further like you said. So the script will become the main priority for the time it will need. but I'll assure you that one day we'll finish :D

After the very long text from yesterday here are some images on the tool we're building to improve the organisation of the project and work on the file sharing system...
I've been mainly working on the character and script parts.
So it is now possible to write the script inside StoryTracer or link a html, rtf or txt file to it and be able to edit it like you want. It is a small notepad inside storytracer. Here is a screenshot (still need to add some buttons)

Some features:
As you can see on screenshot 1 there is a media section. So you can import refs, concepts, renders etc into storytracer and have them close whenever you need them. avoiding the "search your harddisk". And well you can add refs but it would be rather annoying to download an image from the internet open it with paint/photoshop or other tool to make some selections of the image, add some text, do some cropping.
So I integrated (not in the screenshots yet) a small tool allowing all that. So imagine you use your favorite browser, copy in image to the clipboard, go inside storytracer and paste it as media that you can edit, add notes etc. should save quite some time I think? and well we're building in a small adapted for storytracer webbrowser so that things can go even faster. Some more screens from that later on.
Another thing that will be changing is that instead of having all the drop down inside the storyline it will become visual and graphic so you can organise and reorganise the storyline easily with drag and drop
That is about it for now, Hoping the tool catches some attention and don't hesitate to give comments, crits, suggestions it will be a freeware tool after all so it might as well contain the features you would need :)

The omiQron project is in the middle of heavy brainstorming and rewriting so those updates are rather slow.
We have made some rather big progress on the software though so it isn't probably the most interesting in a 3d wip thread but I'll share the progress :)
The major change (which you can't really see) is that we have integrated a database which wasn't planned at the beginning but it speeds things up quite a little :).
The character integration is almost finished now and almost working as well. The biggest update (which was done this weekend) is the integration of a wizard to create a new project.
I've also been thinking that it might be nice to include some versioning on the scripts allowing creation of minor and major changes and avoiding the loss of all the progress on the script (It is always nice to be able to read through the entire progress of a script I'd say)

I made some more progress on the tool. First one being the possibility to rip a tab page from its tab strip. Imagine ur working on your script and you need a couple of sheets to have a look from time to time. It would be rather annoying to have to switch tabs every time you look for something... especially when you have a dual screen setup and only one is being used.... So I came up with the possibility to open a tab in its own window (of course it is still possible to edit information as the menu that belongs to the window is passed on as well, right now in the screenshot you see two menus but they have been merged since and so you have a full screen to write text and your menu being at the same place everytime)
I'll post this picture in a link because it is a 2560*1024 so it might take some time to load :)
This feature is fully working and ready to be tested :)

So I had build a small webbrowser a while back and thought it might come in handy to have a webbrowser integrated. Especially because of some secure connections that will allow FTP uploading and remote database access and could eventually update project websites. This will also allow direct integration of media into the software.

and last but not least, one of the sheets completly working. The smallest one and concerns everything about the different "ages" in your project. for example in omiQron we have a part in the middle ages a parti n today and a part in the future :)

The poor little tool.... it has suffered some big surgery this weekend and I finally found an interface that actually looked like one :). It took two months of research though to get it where I wanted it :)

As you see it now has its webbrowser integrated, as well some remote access features.
The menu has been rebuild, and still need some fixes. All panels are collapsable (except the center one) the menu is collapsable as well.
A lot of shortcuts have been build in and the biggest part of the interface can now be adapted to your likes.
oh btw this is the dark version, but there will be several other color schemes available as well as making ur own.
If somebody is interested I'm looking for some people to test the "remote connection" to a MySql database; I'm with mavenhosting and they allow remote connections to a database but not all providers allow this so I would like to gather a small list of providers who do allow this type of connections.
To do so I made a small tool that you can get here (http://caveman-digital.com/team_ftp/Jozef/private/Storytracer/setup.zip)
it will ask for the IP address of your server (or simply the .com, .net or .something address) the database name (a mysql database is required) to which you would like to connect and finally the username and password for this database (not the FTP one)
for example my server is:
caveman-digital.com
I have a database called:
storytracertest
I'm user:
TheCaveman
and my password would be: (if it would exist ;) )
caveland
just replace these infos with your info from your website and hit the "test connection" button

Your collab tool, seems to be coming along really well.
Tried the remote connection and it couldn't connect. I'm hosted on yahoo. Mind you I can't log into my control panel right now either - although the site itself is fine.

Thanks donShole for testing.
I did some googling on the error and there could be two reasons for the error. One being the server that hosts the database is offline (which could correspond to you not be able to log in to your control panel) the second one would be a firewall problem on the server side who doesn't allow remote connections :(
which is the error I was afraid of...
I'll try and contact Yahoo to see if they do allow remote connections. I do hope it is just a problem at yahoo though ^^

Well we're still hanging in there. Unfortunatly I hardly have any time to keep omiQron going but we'll be back ^^.
I was in norway last week because of work so didnt had the time I would have liked to work on Storytracer but I made some progress during the weekend.
After several results of the "remote connection tool" and some talks on msn with softdistortion I decided to with php and mysql to fix the remote access problem and started workking on "templates". Now each section has its own file and template with a rather simple piece of sql code in it.
This would mean that you can do with the templates what you like and thus update ur website, forums etc without adapting it to storytracer but adapt the templates a little. There should also be some sort of editor for the templates inside storytracer but well need to see how far I can take that before the first release.
But this part is working now and I'm moving on to the next step which is remote login. I would like the tool to be able to use the database with the user table (like the one from a forum, custom website?) to do the logins and this way give access to a project without having to duplicate information and stuff :).
I would also like to finish the icons for the program. I did some cleaning and kept only the icons I made or had the right to you use and avoid like that any problems with icons found on the internet.
and last but not least generate a project file that should be distributed among the team members to "import" the project. Need to make some final security decisions and then it should be done. That is what is on the menu for the coming 4 days :)

First of all merry christmas to everybody hope you had a great day :).
Thanks Softdistortion for the help and the support really very much appreciated.
I managed to keep my schedule sort of hehe :) online logins is now possible, remote databases is the past everything is done through vb and php so that problem is fixed you can integrate storytracer anywhere you want without adapting your websites.
Working on some presets for sites like Joomla; SMF, PHPBB.
The icons are mostly ifinished aswell and there are 7 storytracer file types to share, distribute files even without a website.
Unfortunatly I dont have any screenshots everything is packed and ready to be send to Vancouver. Tomorrow I'm taking the plane. I probably wont have internet for a while, nor a computer so it might get a little quite in here for a couple of weeks but I plan to be back in the beginning of january.
In the meanwhile have a great holiday and happy 2008 :)

Hi to all again.
happy new year first of all. Well I savely arrived on the other side of the atlantic ocean and got myself settled down in Vancouver. VFS will be starting tomorrow and from what I heard of it, it'll be some serious load of work but well it is fun work to do so that isn't a problem :D
So during one year omiQron might move even slower then it is already eventhough behind screens we re still working on the script and all so I hope to get things going again as they where in a year.
I'll keep on working on storytracer because it might even be usefull here at VFS to plan the final reel and all I hope to have something ready pretty soon to let it be tested. I.ll need to see how much time VFS is asking and how much time would be left to do actual software programming but it'll be ready during the coming month I hope

Just kinda trying to keep the thread alive.
As I posted before VFS is a whole lot of work hehe. we have at least 5 assignments a week plus a lot of other stuff to go over but well it is great being in there and to be able to spent whole days only on 3d.
storytracer is suffering from it right now but that shuold be fixed because of some group projects going on at VFS.
Well to keep things going... U guys remember that huge battle sequence I talked about a year ago? well it actually has a horse (well unicorn) in it :P....
This was our first 3d assignment here at VFS and thought I could push it just a little further by adding in some armor and all.
So a first wip in a looong time

how you enjoying Vancouver so far? A while back, I expressed my interest doing audio (music or sound design) for omiQron, just want to let you know that im still on board. Im working in a project studio in North Vancouver, so we can get some pretty quality audio done here, including voice actors.
I like the stuff you got going on. Ive started working out some music inspired from this project. Ill get back to you when its a little more polished.

Wow we actually made it to the 2 year mark. Eventhough things appear rather dead and quiet in here for a couple of months now I still plan on finishing this project and take it as far as possible so please bear with us through the struggle in completing this project :)
I would like to thank everybody that have dedicated a lot of their time to the project so far and I truely hope that they stick around for a little longer. not only did we learn a lot but some of you people have become very good friends :)

It has been quiet in this project for a while now and not sure what is still alive of it ^^. But I have around 50 days left at VFS and then I'm done and job hunt will start but I would like to try and ressurect (if there is anything to ressuect at all ^^) and try and get the project going again in 2009. So wondering who was still around and who is still interested in getting it going again, knowing that we might have to start from scratch and come up with a solid plan ^^

Well the new year is hear time to get things up and going again.
I m done at VFS currently job hunting but hey in the meanwhile got some free time ^^.
Things will change a lot with this new year. the story, the setting the whole project pretty much from scratch to be honest but we kinda had too since the omiQron story was to close to the Twilight story so what we are working on now is never done and doesnt exist :p or at least i didnt find anybody doing it so far :p.
A new workspace is up and running its still empty but well it is brainstorming time for the story and script. so if you guys feel like helping out or giving input etc would love to hear about it ^^. so the new omiqron can be found here:
