View Full Version : changing viewport navigation controls- there must be a way!!!

hey there,

I am currently in the awkward position of using 3ds Max and May simultanously for 2 different projects. :hmm:

My problem is simply this : viewport controls - "why cant they just get along?!?"

as you may be aware, max's and mayas viewport controls are just that little bit different enough to trip you up every time you go to rotate or pan the viewport in one package after you have used another all day and got used to it. :argh:

So far, I havent found a way to change the controls in either package but i am sure i am missing something or there must be a way through scripting ect.

so, if anyone has any idea about how to do this, or any other tips to stop one from going crazy while toing and froing between max and maya, please let me know.

Cheers

Well, that’s the side effect for doing the same things with different packages.

I don’t know Max but in Maya you can assign hot keys to the navigation tools. However the new hotkeys will not allow you to use them temporarily as the built in navigations by just holding a key. You have to pick the next tool.

I also switch back and forth between the two and after a while the mental switch between using one set of navigation tools and the other became less problematic. It's still occasionally a pain if I happen to switch between the two packages frequently (most common is forgetting to hold Alt when middle dragging in maya which can result in all sorts of fun things happening), but it's easy to adjust if I have to stick with one for a little while. At least the mouse wheel now zooms in Maya too. Just takes a little while to get used to.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Max method and Maya method view navigation systems being introduced into the two in the next version or two. It certainly makes it easier to use XSI now that it's got an Alt navigation method. One less to confuse the brain.

sweet! thanks mate. that script looks pretty cool will check it out.

good to know tho that it can become less confusing with time ;)

and, as you say, I would be surprised if there wasnt a feature implemented in the next release of both packages soon so you can change the controls, now that they're family and all. ;)

(but then, i seem to be surprised by unexpected things happening with 3d packages an awful lot these days...)

cheers dude.
keep on truckin!

Alternatively, if you don't mind spending a little money, you could pick up a 3d motion controller, eg: http://www.3dconnexion.com/, which both dramatically improves navigation (for me at least), and makes navigation in all your 3d apps basically identical.

check in the Maya MEL command reference for "overrideModifier"

it allows you to make the 'alt' key act like the 'a' key for example.

If your interested I also have a few scripts for Maya that make it more like max. I wrote one deal that I use all the time that maya is missing the X Y Z transform type in that max has. You can click on a vertex in maya and get its x y z position easy. You can also select several verts and type in their position and it will move them all to that position. Like if you want to just move them all to 2.5 on the Z axis. I also changed the side panel of maya to look like the modifier panel in max. It does not take anything away from maya it only adds to it. You can still hide the panel and work as normal. You can e-mail me if your interested.

it would be cool if you can post the script; it would be awesome if your script had that up and down slider like in max, dont think its possible tho. thats the one thing i miss most im Max.

It does have an up and down slider... not the thin one that max has but that doesn’t affect workflow. Unfortunately I cant post the script because its a zip file with several icons and .mel scripts that are fairly long. CGtalk doesnt have an option to post files like that. I don’t have it hosted on any web sites to point to either. Just e-mail me and I will send it to you.

You may want to take another look at this thread (or my sig :) ).

It's actually a plugin for 3ds Max, but if you're just looking for consistency, it might be helpful. It's also got a slew of other features that make 3ds Max more like Maya to ease the switch between the two.
