View Full Version : Matching a still photo camera?
Joel Hooks 12-17-2002, 07:43 PM I was wondering if anybody would have any suggestions for me about matching a still photo camera? Is there an application that might help, or should I just try to fumble around until I hit it?
Any suggestions would be very useful.
Thanks,

There is a camera match tool in the utilities section of max which should assist.
Failing that, find the vanishing point of the image. Did you do graphic drawing at school?

I did. What would the procedure be after you found the vanishing point? Put a plane on the floor in line with your perspective lines?
I guess the difficut part is the correct FOV and such. Hopefully I am not being to dense :(

Joe,
If you are not able, or from some reason, don't want to use the Cammera match utility(which is handy), you can do the job just approximately.
I don't know what kind of photo you are having, but let's suppose it's some architecture.
If you do know the real size of the buildings, make proxies(box primitives) with the same size and put them in the ''right place'', in the perspective viewport, they have to be parallel or stay on the grid(depend from the image),just match the boxes with the buildings (whuch are supposed to be also parallel to the grid-ground)it is not so easy, I agree. Of course the photo is as background there.
Now create a cammera and after a ''Past cammera to view'',-Perspective viewport, you will have some approximate result.
But my advice is: Use Cammera match, find a tutorial if you don't know the tool, it is a standard plugin in every version, since max2
and is very reliable.

Yes, thanks for the help. I don't have any proper dimensions for the area I am trying to match.
I was just having a hard time getting my head around it for some reason, but I think I have got it now.
Next time we will make sure to make proper measurements to facilitate the use of the camera match tool.
