Hi Everyone,

First, I've read the sticky, and I don't believe this to be fishing, as I'm not inquiring specifically for our own film. I'm hoping this is more of a community outreach, bringing multiple communities together for a rewarding experience. I've posted the same at vi-control.net (an incredible composers' forum - http://vi-control.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3075), and the response has been overwhelmingly postitive ... I hope it's received just as well here.

I was actually turned onto this site by a DVXuser member, in one of our threads over there. For those of you who aren't aware, DVXuser is a community for people in the film & video industry ... some are just starting out & curious, while others are absolute pros ... much like I'm sure it is here, in this wonderful composers' forum.

I wanted to let you all know that there's a festival running right now that just officially started March 1st. Films are due by the end of May. Requirements are that the film features a Super Hero, is shot on a Panasonic DVX100 and/or HVX200 (to be eligible for prizes - other cameras are exhibition only), and must be 5 minutes or less in length. Any genre goes, but must feature a SuperHero(s).

Sound like fun? Looking for a quality short film to get involved with? Then get on over there to DVXuser and make yourself known with some links to samples of your work, your site, what kind of film(s) you'd be interested in working on, etc: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=472901#post472901 (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=472901#post472901)

Shoot, you can even enter the festival yourself for your own short film! :)

If anyone wants to e-mail me directly, they may do so at norm@eefilm.com ... otherwise, just post in the above thread so everyone can get to know you. I'm sure needs will vary from simple 2D work, to 3D animation, to Particle Effects (i.e. what we'll be needing on ours).

Either way, I hope some of you find the above information to be of interest, and make your way over to introduce yourself at DVXuser. Networking can only help everyone involved, opening up new opportunities, and pushing us to new limits we may not have normally achieved.

I am also a member of DVXuser.com. It is a site full of really good filmmakers. The current contests is super hero related which obviously lends itself to animation and sfx.

The link to the contest info is here.
http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?f=61

To check some of the previous contests just go up one level. Some of the films were quite good. They could only be made better by collaboration. Everyone wins! We all get something to show on a reel. Just be careful about promoting the work as there are rules governing the contest. We are also trying to get aspiring and accomplished composers to help score the films. This contest could definitely produce some work of note with all the hard work being put in by people enthusiastic about the films.

I myself will be creating a film. I am currently working on the script so I don't know what effects I will need (I am still really green in the special effects department [actually in every department!]). For those interested, and who wouldn't be with Superheroes involved, please come to our site and post or just post here and I or Envision will foward the info over.

Thanks,
Alex

hi guys. I got to your site some time back...forget how I found you, but you have some great talent represented.
Sorry there hasn't been a response here yet. We're generally a bit slow to new, slightly unusual projects. Another hurdle you may be having is finding available artists who can do what is needed for an endevour like this..."good" integratable characters (if that is what you want) for something like this is gonna be a bit tough. Mybe your artists already know this, but here are some of the basics- you need a good modeller and texture artists, you'll also need someone who knows how to setup and render with lightprobes or is able to fake that HERE's (http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/hdri_tut.html) a link to a lo-tech method you may want to post for your members to get an idea of what they may want to prep for. Here's (http://www.max-realms.com/modules/tutorials/guide_to_hdri_lighting.php) a more hi-tech method.

If you are adding characters to a moving shot you will also need someone who can do motion matching. Here's some info to explain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Match_moving)

And finally you need someone who knows how to comp all this together properly. So, probably the time involved and the technical skill level is a bit above what most will be willing to jump into.

I'm not being of much practical help myself...hopefully this is some info to help the talent on your end with a few of the basic concepts...perhaps that will help them plan things ...when you finally get some help on this end, you'll be in decent shape to get underway.

No matter what the response, thanks for coming in here...looks like you guys are serious and professional...It is nice to see other individuals and communities like that reaching out to collab together.

Softdistortion, thanks for the reply. Also, thank you for those links! Very helpful to at least have a grasp of an idea on what an artist may need/request.

As far as compositing, many of the film makers on DVXuser should be able to handle that fairly well within their own NLE, and or with the use of After Effects/Shake. I cut on Sony's Vegas, and have never had a problem compositing FX in, to a pretty convincing degree.

For those film makers that are looking for interactive CGI characters, then yep, everyone's hands will be full and it will separate the wheat from the chaff as far as who's that dedicated to follow through on the process & who isn't.

Our particular film will largely be particle based, with regards to FX, I believe. If anyone wants to see the script, feel free to PM me, or e-mail me direct at norm@eefilm.com

But again, I'm not hear to pimp our individual film/project. I'd really rather see the talented folks from this community, that are interested in the networking & growth/challenges this could offer, to get over to DVXuser (link provided above) and introduce themselves. The activity that's happening with the composers from vi-control.net is pretty inspriing, and I can only imagine the extra excitement that will come from this community getting involved as well!

I don't know if it's appropriate or not, but if there's a more active place on CGTalk to post this, perhaps an established member here could post a link to this thread.

Have a GREAT day/week,
Norm

ah, ok particles is not so hard then...I thought you guys wanted CG heros. Well atleast the people here know a bit more about the work likley required.

Don't get me wrong, there may be a film maker or two who would LOVE a CG hero, villain, or other creature/object ...

However, the festival requires that the majority of the footage (to compete for placement) be shot with a Panasonic DVX100 or HVX200 ... which means it's most likely that people will be using real talent and looking at CGI more for exploring a hero's powers (i.e. lifting a semi-truck over their head & throwing it, shooting lasers from their eyes, blasting a force from the palm of their hand, etc.).

These should all be areas that would be a little easier to accomplish, yet still take a great deal of skill & talent to make it blend/interact realistically & not look like cheese.

Hi Nando, I'd encourage you to post over at DVXuser, as I don't believe many of them are aware of this specific post and/or community.

Thanks for your interest, and I've gone ahead & e-mailed you as well.

The contest is nearing it's conclusion. The films should be up on Monday or Tuesday. I wanted to invite everyone to head on over to www.dvxuser.com to check out the submissions.

I am also posting because I haven't heard back from my VFX guy. I only have one simple effect in the movie that I need to get done. I would try and learn how to use After Effects and try and get it done myself, but the deadline is Saturday and I have a hundred small things to do to complete this film. If anyone would like to help out on this project, I would be extremely grateful. I will send you a link to the film. I guarantee you will laugh at the movie (don't worry,it is a comedy). If you can help out please e-mail me at adepew07@yahoo.com.
Thanks so much,
Alex
