View Full Version : Can somebody break down face modeling?
Kameel 03-13-2006, 01:12 PM I'm trying to model photo-realistic faces, but I can't fully grasp the concept of facial modelling. I'm trying to make the connection to traditional portrait drawing. I know that the face is made of different planes, so how would I incorporate the plane approach to facial modelling? I want to get this concept down before I start getting into detailed body modelling. Thanks

Generally, I'm not sure if it's useful trying to apply 2d drawing concepts to 3d modeling directly. It might actually be putting the cart before the horse, since most people try to visualize objects in 3d space when drawing them in 2d. That said, modeling off well-made references on image-planes in the front/side-views is a good way to start out.

no clue, but basically he's just giving the usual advice:
loopsloopsloops
avoid tris/ngons
study the muscle structure of the face
(he mentions the latin names of the muscles, so you can check them -
special emphasis on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sternocleidomastoid
which he says is simply forgotten all too often)
cheers
